Last month, Doreen and Harold Lesage hit a significant milestone in their long, happy marriage with the celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary. The Garden River, Ontario couple were surrounded by 200 of their friends and family members, and they had a “wonderful” party on August 10 at the Delta.
“We have the most wonderful family, and they all work so hard,” Doreen said with pride. Of course, she and her husband have done their share of the work, which is why they have lasted this long. Fortunately, Doreen and her husband were only too happy to share some secrets that guaranteed the longevity of their marriage.
The Love Story of Doreen and Harold Lesage Began When They Were Kids
Some stories, like Doreen and Harold Lesage’s, are written together with destinies intertwined without none the wiser. The couple actually grew up in Garden River, and their families were friends before they began dating.
According to Doreen, she and Harold knew they had shared a connection early on. “He’d ask me to go to the movies and shows in town. A couple years into dating, we were walking by Whalen’s Jewellers in the Sault, and he asked if he could buy me a ring. It was like a friendship ring,” she revealed.
They married on August 10, 1954. Five years later, they built a house together and have lived there ever since.
Doreen and Harold Lesage’s Secret to a Long, Happy Marriage
Doreen mentioned the secret to the longevity of their marriage: “understanding each other.” “There’s no need to argue,” she added. “Yesterday’s gone by; you’ll never have that back again. Don’t dwell on things of the past; look for the future for better things.”
She also highlighted the importance of having a sense of humor. She and Harold had an Alexa set up in their home, and one of the ways he would poke fun at her was by speaking to the virtual assistant, joking that it made her jealous.
According to Doreen, Harold would tell Alexa to play him stuff, and it got to the point that she reached out to one of their kids to report it. Doreen said. “I phoned my son and said: ‘I was never jealous of your dad all these years, and now all I hear is ‘Alexa, Alexa.’ She listens to him and plays all his music. What are you trying to do, give us a divorce?’”
Doreen and Harold Lesage’s Big Family Contributed to Their Long Marriage
Doreen Lesage may have attributed the success of their marriage to understanding and having a great sense of humour. But her husband thinks they have something else to thank: their big family.
Doreen and Harold Lesage’s family comprises five children, 19 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. They are Harold’s greatest pride, and he said as much.
“No millionaire can say that. I don’t have the million, but I have many thanks for each one of them. The kids were perfect,” he shared. “They love one another, they get along, and they build their own homes, which makes me proud of them.”
Their family is not just big; they also live close to Doreen and Harold. According to PEOPLE, they get together every Saturday morning for breakfast, a family tradition they have maintained for a decade.

Nancy Lubbers, 87, and her 91-year-old husband Melvin have also been married for 70 years and are still going as strong as their old bones can take them. The pair met at a skating rink when Nancy was just 16, and they have five children, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and a lifetime of memories under their belts.
According to Melvin, the secret to their lasting marriage was knowing how to sit down and talk about things when a disagreement came up and never bringing the issue back up after it was resolved. “Always respect each other even when you don’t agree,” Nancy added. “Just make the best of your life.”
