Roger O’Donnell Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis, Says Biopsy “Was Devastating”

Humans can do whatever they put their minds to, but Roger O’Donnell found out the hard way that sometimes it is just not possible to ignore problems until they go away, no matter how much you try.

The musician has been diagnosed with cancer, and earlier this month, he broached the topic on social media, revealing what sort of cancer he was diagnosed with and recounting his journey with the disease and its treatment.

Roger O’Donnell’s Illness Is a Rare and Aggressive Form of Cancer

According to a tweet he shared on X on Sunday, September 1, in honor of Blood Cancer Awareness Month in the U.K., Roger O’Donnell was diagnosed with “a very rare and aggressive form of lymphoma.”

The talented keyboardist revealed in the post that he had known something was wrong for a few months but ignored the symptoms. When he finally visited a hospital, he got surgery, and the result of the biopsy was reportedly “devastating.”

“I’ve now completed 11 months of treatment under some of the finest specialists in the world and with second opinions and advice from the teams that had developed the drugs I was being given,” O’Donnell wrote in his post.

Following his diagnosis, O’Donnell said he was put on the “latest sci-fi immunotherapy” and “some drugs that were first used 100 years ago.” Then, he had to undergo radiotherapy in the last phase of treatment.

O’Donnell wrote that since his treatment began last fall, he has been doing fine, and the “prognosis is amazing.” The ordeal taught the musician the importance of seeking treatment immediately when symptoms appear rather than waiting.

He wrote, “Cancer CAN be beaten, but if you are diagnosed early enough, you stand a way better chance, so all I have to say is go GET TESTED; if you have the faintest thought you may have symptoms, go and get checked out.”

    Things Could Have Gotten Worse

O’Donnell was lucky to have shelved his stubbornness when he did because the cancer he was diagnosed with, Lymphoma, can be deadly. According to Mayo Clinic, lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system is a component of the body’s germ-fighting and disease-fighting immune system. Lymphoma occurs when healthy lymphatic cells change and grow out of control.

The lymphatic system includes lymph nodes, which are found throughout the body. However, most lymph nodes are located in the abdomen, groin, pelvis, chest, underarms, and neck.

The lymphatic system also includes the spleen, thymus, tonsils, and bone marrow. Thus, lymphoma can affect all these areas and other organs in the body. Thankfully for O’Donnell, it was not too far along when he got medical intervention.

Is Roger O’Donnell Still in The Cure?

Yes, Roger O’Donnell is still a member of The Cure as of 2024. He reportedly joined the band in 1987 and left it in 1989 when he quit their prayer tour.

However, he rejoined them in 1990 and has had multiple stints since then. He is famous as the keyboardist in the band.

    Is Roger O’Donnell Married?

Roger O’Donnell is currently in a relationship with Mimi. The couple is very private about their relationship, so there aren’t many details about what goes on between them. All we know is that the keyboardist is not currently searching and is in good hands as he fights his cancer diagnosis.

What Is Roger O’Donnell’s Net Worth?

Roger O’Donnell is considered one of the wealthiest keyboardists in the U.K., with a net worth of about $5 million. Most of his fortune comes from his musical career, which involved his work in The Cure. O’Donnell is also a performer in The Psychedelic Furs, the Thompson Twins, and Berlin. Furthermore, he has an active solo career.

At 69, O’Donnell remains active in the music scene and does not seem to be considering retirement soon. His cancer diagnosis may have made that difficult. But according to his update, O’Donnell is winning the fight, and soon, his fight against lymphoma will be a bad memory.

    Does Roger O’Donnell Have Children?

No, Roger O’Donnell has no children the public knows about as of September 2024. He is currently in a relationship with a woman named Mimi, but whether by accident or design, the pair have no kids to speak of.
