A Spanish regional government is accusing singer Katy Perry and her team of filming a music video in a protected area without approval. According to a statement from the Spanish authorities, the pop star filmed her music video at the Ses Salines Natural Park “without requesting authorization.”
The filming was for her recently released single, “Lifetimes.” The local authorities in the Balearic Islands say they are investigating the violation. Katy Perry released the video in question on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
In the video, she is seen dancing and singing in a tropical location. Other parts of the 4-minute video show the songwriter at a crowded nightclub. At a closer look, the piece of land she shot at, which contained dunes, looked like a roped-off area.
According to the Spanish authorities, Katy Perry and her team required a license to film in that specific area. The dunes in the location are of ecological value; hence, they are the most protected areas of the Balearic Islands.
In what would be a huge relief to Katy Perry and her management, the statement assured that the singer hadn’t committed a crime against the environment.
Troubling Times for Katy Perry
The statement from the Spanish government has worsened a tough few months for the multiple Grammy Award winner. Katy Perry is still reeling from the embarrassing failure of her July single, “Woman’s World.”
The single made a poor showing on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at a dismal 63 spot. The song also failed to shine in other charts. For example, it only went as high as 65 on the Global 200 chart and 47 on the UK chart.
On the music streaming platform Spotify, the song only reached the 110th spot on the US chart and 58th spot on the global ranking. Katy Perry made the song to promote women’s empowerment, but it was not well-received by the public.

According to a source, the reasons are pretty obvious. Katy Perry worked on the song with a controversial figure, producer Dr. Luke. Recently, singer Kesha accused the music producer of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse.
Although Perry and Dr. Luke had worked together a lot of times in the past, entertainment buffs believe she was “insane” to work with him on the project given the circumstances.

Fast-forward to 2024, Perry attended Swift’s Australia tour in February. “Got to see an old friend shine tonight,” she wrote on her Instagram.
