It is now public knowledge that “How I Met Your Mother” star Alyson Hannigan hasn’t watched the show’s spinoff, “How I Met Your Father.” The Washington, DC-born actress has now revealed why. In an interview with journalists, the 50-year-old stated that the nostalgia was too overwhelming for her.
She admitted that one of her HIMYM costars, Cobie Smulders, sent her some pictures from the set. But when she looked at them, “It kind of made my heart hurt,” she said. “I was like, ‘I don’t think I’m ready to watch.’”
Smulders, 42, participated in one of the HIMYF series, which lasted from 2022 to 2024. She played the role of Robin Scherbatsky in the original series along with Alyson Hannigan. So did Jason Segel, Josh Radnor, and Neil Patrick Harris.
However, Hannigan didn’t shy away from the project entirely. She made a short appearance in the last episode of the show’s first season. Interestingly, Allison Hannigan’s husband, Alexis Denisof, also joined in. Hannigan disclosed that he played his HIMYM character, Sandy Rivers, in the spinoff. “I should have probably watched that episode,” she jokingly remarked.
Prominent on the list of people who played roles in both shows is the HIMYM director Pamela Fryman. She directed a number of the new show’s episodes. Again, this is another reason why Hannigan’s inability to watch could seem weird.
But the mother of two still can’t bring herself to it. “I should have,” she reiterated. “But I just couldn’t. It just made me sad because I’m like, oh, that’s the same set.”

Hannigan Talks About Her Experience With HIMYM
Speaking about her time shooting HIMYM, Alyson Hannigan described it as an experience she didn’t want to end. “I mean, it’s sort of just a montage of great memories. That was just such a wonderful job to go to every day, and the people were incredible,” she stated. “It was a blast. It really was.”
“I just remember being emotional during it because there were a lot of ‘last,’” she recalled. “We all took the year to really appreciate all the moments that we’ve had so many of in the however many seasons we did it,” she added.
