Nancy Leigh “Naleigh” Mi-Eun Kelley, 14
Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley’s first child, Nancy Leigh Mi-Eun Kelley (nicknamed Naleigh), was adopted from South Korea as an infant. Naleigh was born with a congenital heart issue and underwent open-heart surgery before meeting her parents. According to Heigl, adoption was always part of her and Kelley’s family plan.
“Josh and I started talking about [adoption] before we were even engaged,” she said in 2014. Naleigh is now 14, and Heigl is dealing with teenage tantrums and angst, but the proud mom would not change anything about it. Even if Naleigh thinks she is a “tyrant” for not allowing her to own a phone.
Adalaide Marie Hope Kelley, 12
Katherine Heigl and Kelley’s second child, Adalaide, was also adopted from Louisiana in 2012. During an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Heigl told host Jay Leno that Adalaide’s adoption was “serendipitous.” According to the actress, she and Kelley initially wanted to adopt internationally again, but the process became very challenging.
Heigl said that they had only just started to look into domestic adoption when they received a call about Adalaide. “My lawyer called and said, ‘There’s a birth mother, and she’s due in four weeks. She’s all yours if you want her!’” Heigl said.
Adalaide and her sister have gotten older and have started to “have more questions” about their origins, Heigl shared in her April 2021 cover story for Parents. But she and her husband are prepared. “We have said to them, ‘This is your story. We don’t have any information about your biological fathers, but we do have a bit about your biological mothers,'” Heigl said.
Later in the interview, Heigl revealed some things about Adalaide’s personality and hobbies. Apparently, she is “all piss and vinegar,” is “fearless” to a fault, and has a passion for riding horses on their ranch. She also loves to make Naleigh laugh.
Joshua Bishop Kelley Jr., 7
Joshua is Katherine Heigl’s and her husband’s only biological child. They announced his conception in June 2016, expressing excitement and joy. Joshua Bishop Kelley Jr. eventually arrived on December 20, 2016.
Just after his arrival, he and his parents were featured on the cover of PEOPLE, where they opened up about how Joshua came to be. “It was a surprise! I knew I wanted to expand our family. I knew I wanted to have more children,” Heigl said. She added, “I just didn’t know how we were going to go about that.”
She later admitted during her interview for Parents that she “was so relieved” when she found out she was having a boy. “It was actually a big reason why I was vacillating between trying to get pregnant or adopting again, since with adoption you can specify the sex,” she explained before joking, “I just thought another girl could mean lifelong therapy for all of us.”
