Hollywood has developed an affinity for sequels and franchises, which is why someone thought making “A Quiet Place: Day One” was a great idea. To be fair, it is not a completely terrible idea, given the mystery the original theme of the horror story still presents. However, fans expected the prequel to provide some answers, which it did not.
The first two movies in the franchise left many questions about the monsters with hypersensitive hearing. This led the internet to create logical questions and point out plot holes. However, the beauty of “A Quiet Place” remained its silly mystery.
Viewers were transported into an apocalyptic world with a very simple yet tasking rule: making noise gets you killed. There was no other information, and that scarcity of information worked well as viewers got to know the family trying to survive and deliver a baby quietly.
The sequel was warmly welcomed because it continued that same journey, picking up exactly where we left off. The third film in the franchise was a prequel and while it delivered in some aspects, it failed in others.

“A Quiet Place: Day One” Review
“A Quiet Place: Day One” was directed and co-written by Michael Sarnoski (sharing a credit with John Krasinski). Unlike the first two movies that focus on the Abbott family, “Day One” features a new character in a losing battle with cancer.
Her name is Sam, and Lupita Nyong’o perfectly brings her to life. She was just the right amount of bitter, sarcastic, and mean. And what’s an apocalypse without a pet by your side? Will Smith in “I Am Legend” had his dog by his side … until it turned after taking a hit for him.
Anyway, in “A Quiet Place: Day One,” Sam has a cat named Frodo who moves around with her. Critics think this is an unnecessary handicap. It softens Nyong’o’s character, but many believe the actress could have done that without help from the cat.
Her character teams up with Joseph Quinn, who plays a British law student named Eric. They both have very communicative eyes that serve them well in the movie. However, since there isn’t a newborn between them, the cat becomes chaos on four legs.
Some Areas Critics Have Critiqued
One big fact critics have fumed about is that Sarnoski chose to avoid answering questions about the monsters. He barely even dwelled on how people figured out the importance of being quiet. In one minute, people are getting eaten in the streets of New York, and several minutes later, there’s a group of survivors putting their fingers to their lips.
Many believe that it would have worked out well if viewers got to watch someone put two and two together. Another area critics have dwelled on is how the prequel focuses too much on Sam and Eric, a stranger who attaches himself to her and Frodo while she goes about achieving her one goal: surviving long enough to get to her favorite pizza place in Harlem.
It is a compelling fantasy about a terminal person trying to survive the first day of an apocalypse. The “A Quiet Place: Day One” cast also worked hard to channel the characters well, especially Nyong’o.
Her relevance in the movie is cemented, but what Eric is doing there is a point of confusion. Critics think the character is half-baked and too underwritten to make much sense.
The movie also has competing forces at play, wanting to be both a meditative character study and a thrilling horror movie simultaneously. It never quite blends and perhaps would have been better left out.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” in Box Office
The movie reportedly earned $52.2 million in its opening weekend, almost matching its budget. The “A Quiet Place: Day One” budget was $67 million, but it has crossed $125 million at the domestic box office, which is a successful record.
Hit or Miss?
“A Quiet Place: Day One” could have done better in many ways and would have. However, people expected more from a “Day One” built on the premise of the dangerous world painted in the first movie.

At some point, it felt like excitement was being crammed in just to keep things lively, but Krasinski’s flair for horror was also fairly represented. The movie is definitely not a total miss, but it does reinforce the statement that Hollywood does not need franchises.
