Tyler Perry is a creative, he has brought movie lovers many gems, but in recent times, his projects have been getting major criticism. The vitriol is enough to weigh anybody down, but not the Hollywood giant.
The filmmaker recently appeared on Keke Palmer’s ‘Baby, This Is Keke’ podcast, where he shared his thoughts about the critics of his films. According to him, judgment from some “highbrow negroes” is not enough to discourage him from carrying out his God-given purpose.
What Tyler Perry Said About Haters
Perry is well aware of what haters say about his work, but during the interview, the 54-year-old revealed that he doesn’t allow the noise they make to get to him. According to Tyler, he is fulfilling his God-given purpose, and no naysayer can distract him from it.
The screenwriter also told Palmer, “If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in hell.” The actress seemed to agree because as soon as he spoke the words, she slowly exhaled with an “Ouu” as she shut her eyes.

How Tyler Perry Deals With the Negativity
To drown out critics’ negativity, Tyler Perry said he leans into the positive messages he receives from his supporters. Perry stated, “For everyone who is a critic, there are thousands of…emails from people saying they felt seen by his work.”
Tyler Perry’s movies have reportedly resonated so deeply with some that they would write him letters asking how he knew so much about their family. The talented movie mogul said that many of his fans can’t afford therapy. However they can purchase a ticket to one of his films, which he believes helps them cope with their traumas.
Perry on People Who Disapprove of His Storylines
During his sit-down with Palmer, Tyler Perry also discussed classist Black people who only seem to have negative opinions about his films.
He said, “You’ve got this ‘highbrow Negro’ who is all up in the air with his nose up looking at everything, and then you got people like where I come from and me who are grinders who really know what it’s like…”
Next, the well-known producer added that people “whose mothers were caregivers for White kids and were maids and housekeepers…beauticians” deserve to have their relatives’ stories told.
Perry said, “Don’t discount these people and say that their stories don’t matter. Who are you to say which Black story is important or should be told.” The award-winning actor ended his impassioned message by stating, “Get out of here with that b******,” much to Palmer’s surprise.
Tyler Perry’s New Movie Got Nasty Ratings
“Divorce in the Black” is Tyler Perry’s latest work, and it has sparked much discussion among critics and his fans. The story follows a preacher’s daughter, Ava (Meagan Good), who is in love with an abusive husband, Dallas (Cory Hardrict).
She remains with him despite the abuse, hoping that her love for him will change him, but nothing changes. This keeps on Ava until along comes a knight in shining armor, Benji (Joseph Anderson), a high school ex-lover of hers. The movie was well-made, but the ratings fell short.
Rotten Tomatoes rated “Divorce in the Black” 0/10, a first for Tyler Perry’s movie plot. One critic wrote, “Content collapse. Asinine, tedious, and reckless are a few words to describe Tyler Perry’s latest romance drama, a genre he seems to have no personal familiarity with.”
Similar comments abound on social media, but there are also comments from those who enjoyed the story. Regardless of public sentiment, it is clear there are those who can relate to the story and perhaps learn one or two things from it.
