On Tuesday, July 30, during a press conference, Team USA Gymnastics revealed the team’s risqué name, but Simon Biles has now confessed that it is not the team’s true name. The team’s actual name is far from risqué, certainly not a phrase, and has great symbolic ties. We also have Biles to thank for finding out what the true team name is.
Biles, who has broken the internet several times for her amazing talent as a gymnast, also made the headlines in December 2023 after her husband’s controversial comment went viral. Simon Biles’ husband, Jonathan Owen, sparked backlash when he said, in an interview, that he considered himself “the catch” in their relationship.
Furthermore, the football player claimed he didn’t know who she was until they met, which further fueled fans’ anger and forced the talented gymnast to defend him. Several months later, Simon Biles is back in the headlines for breaking records in the 2024 Olympics and for revealing the name of the US Women’s Gymnastics team.
The Fake Name Was a Risqué Phrase
The risqué phrase announced at the Tuesday, July 30, press conference is not the actual team name. It was a joke the official team made after they took home the gold during the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Hezley Rivera, and Jade Carey first revealed their risqué name, “F[–k] Around and Find Out,” to ESPN commentator Aly Raisman. However, hours later, Simone Biles came forward to reveal the actual name of the USA Gymnastics team—a quite fitting one for a team that bagged the gold medal.
Simone Biles Reveals Team USA Gymnastics’s Team Name
A few hours after teasing fans with the fake moniker, Biles took to X to announce the “official team name.” She wrote, “Okay, on the real though, the official team name is Golden Girls (because oldest Olympic team).”
The clever nickname is reportedly a reference to the NBC sitcom “The Golden Girls.” The series ran from 1985 to 1992. Those on the cast included Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo.
Biles, 27, also tweeted a sweet shoutout to her personal coach, Cecile Canqueteau-Landi: “S/O to Cecile.”
Former Names of the Team USA Gymnastics Team
In recent years, the USA has been sending female gymnasts to the Olympics to fight for gold. As a result, they have always come away with a team name that is usually linked to the characteristics of the athletes.
Team USA’s female gymnasts were called the “Magnificent Seven” in 1996, the “Fierce Five” in London 2012, the “Final Five” in Rio 2016, and the “Fighting Four” in Tokyo in 2021. The name “Golden Girls” fits all too well this time, as the team recently won gold.
Their win was due to the group’s final score of 171.296, nearly six points above second-place Italy. Biles said during the press conference, “I think in 2016, we were destined to win gold, and so whenever we went out there, we did our job, and we did win gold, and it was just like we were a little young and naive.”
She added, “It didn’t hit the way that it does now, now that I’m older and we have so much more experience, and we’re out here really having fun and enjoying what we’re doing.”
Simone Biles Has Unlocked a New Achievement
Simone Biles and the team have been having fun at the Olympics. Following the team’s final win, the gymnastics legend has become the country’s most decorated gymnast—with eight medals—in Olympic history.
She has now surpassed former American gymnast Shannon Miller, who earned seven medals at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games. Tuesday’s victory marks Biles’ fifth gold medal and her record-breaking 38th medal overall—which includes her wins at the Olympics and World Championships.

This is the second gold for Lee and Carey and the first for Chiles and Rivera, the latter of whom did not participate in any games on Tuesday. Team USA previously went home with the silver medal in the event at the Tokyo and Beijing Games and gold in Rio and London.
Biles will have another opportunity to do even more on Thursday as she competes in the women’s individual all-around event.
