Stephen Baldwin recently shared an intriguing story about Sean Penn on the “One Bad Movie” podcast. The pair were initially drafted as actors for the movie “Casualties of War.” Baldwin was still an unknown figure in Hollywood at the time, but he was to become the third lead in the movie.
However, Penn, at 63, was already an experienced actor and brimming with tips. The characters Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn, and Baldwin portrayed were hostile, so the trio’s on-screen relationships were tense. However, Baldwin says Penn took things even further.
Unsatisfied by their simply playing the part of men who did not like one another, Penn wanted to act the part in real life. He seemingly believed not getting along with each other would help them channel their characters better. So, he warned Baldwin not to become friends with Fox.

Penn was to play the sergeant of a platoon Fox and Baldwin were in, and they were all supposed to hate Fox’s character in the film. He reportedly told Baldwin, “You have to hate him with me; do what I tell you.”
The tip shocked Stephen Baldwin. He wondered how he could do that when they would be spending a lot of time together on set. It was free advice from a veteran, and Baldwin, ever willing to get better, tried to follow it. However, he failed miserably.
According to his narration, he mixed it all up when he approached Fox and congratulated him for his work in “Family Ties.” The act became Baldwin’s first rebellion on set, and Penn was not exactly happy about it.
The relationship between them did not improve after that. During one rehearsal, Baldwin asked the crew to cut because Penn kept mumbling his lines. The director, Brian De Palma, did not like this audacity and warned Baldwin, saying, “You don’t cut my camera.”
A whole rant reportedly followed, during which Palma also let him know that Penn’s approach was above reproach, even if there was mumbling. Tension between the actors rose to a crescendo nearly a week later, eventually leading to Baldwin’s dismissal from the movie.
Art Linson delivered the news over the phone. He reportedly told Baldwin directly that they were sending him home. He would be on a plane that very evening.
Stephen Baldwin painted a scenario in which he was instructed to gather his belongings only to discover that they had been filled by other people. During his interview on the podcast, he laughed about the memory and admitted that he got something out of it despite his dismissal.

Footage of the interview was shared on Baldwin’s Instagram page, prompting mixed reactions from users. Some pointed out that Penn had only wanted them to stay in character and that it was not personal. Others bashed him, joking about his terrible acting.
One user even went as far as calling him the only “Baldwin that can’t act,” while another wondered why he was still getting interviews. Baldwin does not seem to hold grudges about what happened, but many do not like hearing only his side of the story.
