Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best actors that has ever graced the big screens and now we know that he will be making his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just not as the hero we have all gotten used to him playing.
Indeed, rather than the smart-talking and tech-crazed Iron Man most Marvel fans know him as Downey Jr will portray Doctor Doom in a new movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Robert Downey Jr. Will Play Doctor Doom
The great news came on Saturday at the San Diego Comic-Con during the Marvel panel, and the actor was present for the announcement.
The reveal came after a mysterious introduction and the entry of a masked Doctor Doom, standing amidst other masked men. There was short suspense as fans waited to see who was behind the mask, and when Downey Jr. revealed himself, there was a lot of excitement in the air.

The revelation happened on stage in front of the crowd in the event’s biggest venue, Hall H. And Downey Jr. had a few words to say to mark the occasion. He said, “New mask, same task. What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters.”
More About the New Movie Downey Jr Will Feature In
Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which will reportedly hit theaters in May 2026, according to a press release. The movie will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who have previously directed four Marvel movies.
The Russo brothers will also direct “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set to release in May 2027. They are one of those truly excited about Downey Jr’s return to the MCU.
Joe Russo told the Hall H audience that welcoming Downey Jr. back into the family is “proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel [Multiverse]” and that he’s “the one person who could play Victor Von Doom.”
The Oscar winner has always been open to returning to the MCU. In April, he told Esquire that he’d “happily” come back because the MCU “is too integral a part of my DNA.”
Is This the End of Iron Man?
Robert Downey Jr. first picked up the comic book superhero act of Iron Man in the 2008 film of the same name, and it had two sequels. He also appeared in a number of Marvel franchise movies, including 2018’s “Infinity Wars” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
It is true that his character was famously killed off in 2019’s “Endgame.” However, Marvel always seems to have a trick up their sleeve, so there is a lot of speculation about how the universe will balance Downey’s double duty.
“Avengers: Doomsday” will replace the previously announced “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in the MCU release calendar. Jonathan Majors was supposed to be a part of the cast in “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in 2026. However, he was dropped by the studio after he was found guilty of assault and harassment in a 2023 trial.
Not long after news of the verdict, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN that Marvel Studios would no longer be moving forward on any future projects with Majors.
