During the final evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama, 60, reflected on what happened between Tim Walz and his son, Gus, the night before.
She wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, August 22: “I was touched to see Gus Walz’s joy when his dad @Tim_Walz took the stage last night. Thankful for you showing us all what real love looks like, Gus.”

Michelle urged people to come together as a nation that “embraces this kind of warmth and vulnerability, instead of making fun or mocking it.” As far as she is concerned, “We could all use some of Gus’s [examples] in our own lives.”
The tweet referred to Tim Walz’s speech on Wednesday, August 21. It was so deep that it left his son, Gus, visibly overcome with emotion.

Tim Walz’s son Gus, his mother, Gwen, and sister, Hope, were in the audience as the vice presidential hopeful officially accepted his nomination to become Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 presidential election.
“Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world, and I love you,” Tim Walz directed at his family during his speech. The powerful statement caused Gus to stand up amidst the seating crowd, with a proud smile and tears flowing down his face as he watched his father. “That’s my dad,” Gus was also captured saying, applauding and pointing at his dad on stage.
What We Know About Tim Walz Son’s Disability
According to reports, Tim Walz’s son Gus has a non-verbal learning disorder, ADHD, and an anxiety disorder. However, his parents have referred to these conditions as his “superpower.”
“When our youngest Gus was growing up, it became increasingly clear that he was different from his classmates,” the couple told PEOPLE. “Gus preferred video games and spending more time by himself.”
The behavior extended into his teenhood, and eventually, they learned Gus struggles with a non-verbal learning disorder in addition to an anxiety disorder and ADHD.
“We love our Gus,” Walz and Gwen said in their statement to PEOPLE. “We are proud of the man he’s growing into, and we are so excited to have him with us on this journey.”
What the Obamas Said at the DNC
As earlier stated, Michelle Obama and her husband, Barack, gave rousing speeches at the DNC last month. On Tuesday, August 20, the pair presented a united front supporting Kamala Harris and delivered a grave message to those listening.
Michelle discussed what Harris’s becoming president could mean for the country. She said hope is once more on the horizon, presenting a chance to rid the country of “demons” that have done nothing but “consume.”
“To be honest, I am realizing that until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. And maybe you have experienced the same feelings: That deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future,” she added.

Her husband echoed similar sentiments with different words. The former President attacked Trump during his speech, calling him out for “the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories [and] this weird obsession with crowd sizes.”
Then, Barack urged the crowd to consider the stakes this year. He wanted them to ask some very crucial questions and then assured them Donald Trump was not the answer to any of them.
