Lily Collins recently opened up about how her portrayal of Emily Cooper in the Netflix hit series “Emily in Paris” has allowed her to regain a playful attitude towards fashion following her turbulent relationship with her ex.
While she was in the relationship, Collins was forced to adhere to certain fashion rules, mostly because her lover was a controlling person. She now calls that period of her life the “dull period” and has seemingly put it behind her.
How Lily Collins Tried To Be Perfect For Her Ex-boyfriend
Lily Collins, 35, talked about her “dull period” during an interview with InStyle on August 6. During the interview, Collins recalled doing some things just to please a man. According to Collins, when she was with this ex-boyfriend—whom she has never publicly named—he wanted her to dress and talk a certain way.

“I thought for a while that if you make yourself physically, with volume, appear bigger, then you’re taking up too much space,” she explained. The actress previously discussed her ex-boyfriend in her 2017 book “Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.” In it, she wrote about how she tried to be “perfect for him.”
Unfortunately, she wrote that “the more I silenced my voice with this guy, the more isolated I became.” Collins gradually became “a one-woman island.” One so dependent that she would get scared that leaving him meant choosing to “be nothing.”
How “Emily in Paris” Helped Lilly Collins
When Lilly Collins finally worked up the courage to end that relationship, she told InStyle that working with costume designer Patricia Field—the consulting costume designer on “Emily in Paris” seasons one and two—was very empowering for her.
According to Collins, she sent feedback on several fashion options for the show, thinking she was only providing guidance. However, it turns out Field took them as “specific requests.” Collins was “blown away” when she arrived in Paris months later to see what was waiting for her during the first fitting.
When she expressed her surprise, the costumier seemed confused and reportedly asked, “But you said you liked them?” Lilly Collins later revealed that one of the things she loved about her Emily character was that “she takes up space in a lovely way.”
“Mixing patterns and prints textures, styles in a way that was foreign to me,” she said. “I started to realize that I didn’t have to be afraid of color anymore.”
What the Costuming Process Taught the Actress
“Emily in Paris” has received some criticism for the costuming of the first few seasons. However, Lilly Collins said it didn’t bother her, especially because she “had enough distance” from her character and that “Emily was meant to look out of place.”
Collins added that Emily is also supposed to contrast with her boss, Sylvie, a “sleekier and sexier” character. “I knew that we were, a little bit, playing into the tongue-in-cheek of it all,” she said. The actress stated that her own fashion sense might not always balance with Emily’s in the show, but its costuming process taught her how to “mix-and-match in a way that feels natural” to her.
