Words matter in politics, and Kerry Washington used them well on the final night of the DNC when she was host. She kicked off by welcoming the audience to the final night of the DNC and then talked about how great the experience had been so far.
It was great work she did, but two moments stand out from the rest. The first was when Washington brought on her “Scandal” costar Tony Goldwyn to make a video she had the audience record and post online.
The second was when she sought the help of Kamala Harris’ great-nieces Amara and Leela for a lesson on pronouncing the Vice President’s name correctly. An action people suspect may be a sneak diss at a certain Republican who refused to get the pronunciation correctly several days before.
Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn Backed Kamala Harris at the DNC
During her time as host of the DNC, one of the things Kerry Washington did, aside from giving moving speeches, was bringing on Tony Goldwyn, who was only too eager to express support for Kamala Harris.

Before he was brought on stage, Washington emphasized the capacity in which she was participating — not as a star but as a concerned citizen, among other labels. Goldwyn joined her to make a video to show the world that democrats have finally united to fight, and they plan to win. After the video, she bid him farewell, and the show continued.
Kerry Washington Brought Kamala Harris’ Grandnieces’ on Stage
Another memorable moment from the DNC finale was when Kerry Washington brought Kamala Harris’ grandnieces on stage. They were a great spectacle, but Wahsington’s action aimed to teach the audience how to pronounce Harris’s name.
She pointed out how some people still have issues pronouncing her name correctly. The actress noted that while confusion is understandable, disrespect is not in response to some, especially Republicans, mispronouncing Harris’ name.
The girls, Amara and Leela, demonstrated the pronunciation of ‘Kamala’ by breaking it down into ‘comma’ and ‘luh’ while receiving cheers and support from the audience.
Along with the excited audience, Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, was seen thoroughly involved with the demonstration as Washington encouraged everyone to practice saying Harris’ name correctly.
Was Kerry Washington Throwing Shade at Someone?
When Kerry Washington decided to bring Harris’ grandnieces up on stage to teach those who still couldn’t pronounce her name correctly how to, many could not help but think she was throwing shade at a certain Republican.
Days before the DNC, a CNN panel dissolved into a heated argument after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) repeatedly mispronounced the Vice President’s name. Mace mispronounced Harris’s first name a few times during the interview, causing various other guests to correct her.
However, things got worse when she deliberately pronounced the name wrong after getting it right on her first attempt. The mispronunciation led author and professor Michael Eric Dyson to criticize Mace for disrespecting Harris. But she just dug in her heels, defending her right to pronounce the name as she wished.
Mace later called out CNN for caring too much about pronunciation rather than policy amidst ongoing national issues such as inflation, crime, and the border crisis.
Meet Kamala Harris’ Nieces and Nephews
While she has no biological kids, Kamala Harris is proud to be a stepmom to her husband, Doug Emhoff’s, kids, Ella and Cole, and she is blessed with nieces and nephews from both families.
The vice president has one sister, Maya Harris, who is the mother of Meena Harris. She is also an aunt to nieces and nephews on Emhoff’s side, including his brother Andrew Emhoff’s daughter Arden and son Jasper. Doug also has a sister, Jackie, who has children. However, little is known about them because they are very private.
