Katie Couric, the former “TODAY” co-anchor, just became a grandma. Her daughter, Ellie Monahan, and son-in-law, Mark Dobrosky, had their first baby, John Albert Dobrosky, on March 23, 2024, at 8:23 a.m.
John was “just shy of seven pounds,” Couric wrote in the caption of an Instagram post on March 24. Furthermore, the 67-year-old TV host shared the meaning behind her grandson’s nickname and middle name. Here’s everything we know.

Couric announces that little John Albert Dobrosky will be called Jay as a tribute to his maternal grandfather, and Albert is after his paternal grandfather. “He will be called Jay in honor of his maternal grandfather. Albert is after Mark’s paternal grandfather,” she wrote. “Mom and Dad (Ellie and Mark) are over the moon (it was a full moon).”
“Jay,” their nickname for little John Albert Dobrosky, honors Couric’s late husband and John’s grandad, Jay Monahan. Jay Monahan passed away from colon cancer in 1998.

Katie Couric Shared the Photo of the Newborn’s Parents
Katie Couric posted some adorable photos on her social media. They include pictures of the proud parents, Ellie and Mark. She also posted some precious shots of herself and her youngest daughter, Carrie Monahan, holding the newborn.
“I am happy to have my first grandchild. Carrie can’t wait to be a cool Aunt, and Molner is enjoying handing out cigars,” Couric wrote, referring to her husband, John Molner, who appears in the last pic.

“Three weeks until B-day! Ellie’s baby shower was a celebration of love and friendship through the years,” Katie Couric wrote in the caption. The TV host also posted a bunch of stunning photos from the event.
The tables were decorated with beautiful flowers, and Couric wore a cream-colored matching set. Her daughter’s green dress looked stunning, and the mother-daughter duo looked fabulous.
“Thank you to everyone who came and made it so special for Ellie and the baby-to-be! Bringing a baby into the world is the ultimate act of love and hope,” she said. “I am so excited!!!” She also revealed that the baby’s sex was unknown and that it would be a “delivery room surprise” for everyone.

Couric shared a cute video on Instagram in December 2023. The footage showed when she learned she would be a first-time grandmother. The TV host sat outside as Carrie Monahan handed her a bracelet.
In the video, Katie Couric struggled to read what it said. “Brand, brandy, brandy, B, granny,” she said through laughter before finally figuring out, “Granny to be.” Her face goes serious. “I’m pregnant,” Ellie Monahan said off-camera. Couric retorted, “You are? Wow!”
“Are you freaked out?” Ellie asked. “No,” Couric responded through laughter. The TV host wrote in the caption that she had been “dying to tell” her followers the news. “This is what happens when you go to a @taylorswift concert last summer and forget your friendship bracelet and your daughters say, ‘Don’t worry, we made one for you!” she said.

Couric’s older daughter, Elinor Tully Monahan, was born in Washington, D.C., on July 23, 1991. She’s a Yale University graduate, and she’s now living in Los Angeles. She is a screenwriter with impressive credits on TV shows like “Mr. Robot and The Boys.”
