Authorities claim a Minnesota truck driver was busy on a sex site just before he rear-ended multiple cars, including an SUV containing a pregnant mother and three young children. They did not see the accident coming, and apparently, neither did he, as he was busy perusing the site. Authorities even claim the trucker replied to messages on Instagram while driving.
While details of the accident remain sketchy, here’s all we know.
Details of the Accident Caused by a Sex Site
When the Minnesota truck driver, identified as Joel Adam Sassmann, 52, rear-ended their car, the mother and the three kids in the SUV were lucky enough to get away with their lives. However, the mother’s unborn child died as a result of the crash.
According to a probable cause statement, the first car Sassmann’s truck rear-ended was a Chevrolet Suburban. Then that was pushed into a Ford Escape that subsequently struck a Honda Accord. After being struck, the Honda Accord entered a ditch. Meanwhile, the Escape went on to hit a Volvo SUV, which then hit a second Escape.

The mother who lost her baby was in the front passenger seat of the Suburban, the original point of impact for Sassmann’s truck. The mother, identified as Kaitlyn Herbert, was transported to the hospital in the aftermath of the crash.
There, an emergency C-section was performed, but the unborn baby had already passed due to blunt force trauma, authorities said. A tragic outcome. Still, everyone can agree that it could have been worse.
Aside from losing her pregnancy, her three children, who were in the backseat during the collision, could have died. Sassmann has been charged with a criminal vehicular operation causing the death of an unborn child in the August 2023 crash.
The Trucker Was Focused on a Sex Site
Just before the crash, authorities claim that Sassmann had been searching a sex site and sending online messages.
They also alleged that the trucker’s attention was divided. The probable cause statement read, “There is evidence of the defendant accessing websites and sending messages on his cellular phone shortly before the collision. If the defendant [had] been alert to the slowed traffic, then he could have safely slowed his vehicle and this collision does not occur.”
Instead of doing his civic duty as a driver, Sassman was on demon time. According to investigators, he sent eight sex chats, did several searches on a sex website, and texted a woman on Instagram. He also changed the orientation on his phone to landscape five times, and that’s not all he did. Sassmann will appear in court in December and has not yet entered a plea.
How Are the Victims Doing?
Herbert’s three children, aged 1, 3, and 4, were all hospitalized after the crash, as was the person behind the wheels of the vehicle. According to a GoFundMe, Herbert’s 4-year-old son got away with scratches and bruises. However, her 1-year-old son had to receive staples in his head. Her daughter, 3, broke her leg in the crash.

The disaster underscores the importance of observing traffic protocols and being observant while driving. Sassmann is in trouble because he got carried away watching a sex site, and a mother has to mourn the death of her unborn child.
