Tommie Lee Williams, 51, was arrested in Gwinnett County, Georgia, after he tried to rob a Chick-fil-A restaurant with a handgun. In recent years, gun violence in the US has become a common occurrence. Meanwhile, citizens remain divided on how they feel about guns.
Since 2016, there have been over 10,000 homicides by firearm in the U.S. each year. Firearms have also been found to make up the majority of murder weapons in the country by far. It is proof of the increasing rates of gun violence occurring throughout the nation.
Georgia, the state Williams attempted to commit armed robbery in, has about 20 gun deaths per 100,000 residents in the United States this year. The delivery driver he met in the Chick-fil-A establishment may have become a number on the statistics board if he had not fought hard for his life, revealing the robber’s identity and also saving the business from getting robbed.
What Happened During the Chick-fil-A Robbery
Williams was at Chick-fil-A in the early hours of the morning. But it was not for the Chick-fil-A menu or their finger-licking dishes. Williams, allegedly armed and masked, broke into the restaurant at Stone Mountain Highway, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department, and upon gaining entry, he threatened a delivery driver he found in the kitchen area using a handgun.
The Gwinnett County Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. “When officers arrived, the victim told them that he was a delivery driver for the business. And while he was inside working, the suspect smashed through a drive-thru window with a rock and entered the kitchen area.”
“The suspect told the victim that he was going to die if he didn’t open the safe and pointed a handgun at him. The victim told police that he didn’t know the combination to the safe, so he decided to fight off the armed robber,” the post continued.
The surveillance footage captured the two men locked in combat for several minutes as they struggled over the gun. However, in the end, the Chick-fil-A driver ultimately fought off the armed robber.
How Cops Caught the Perp
The thief may have gotten away with all that happened. But during his tussle with the driver, his mask was pulled off. It assisted the police in corroborating the suspect’s identity after Williams fled the premises via a back door.
Detectives with the Gwinnett County Police Department ultimately identified a vehicle believed to have been used in the would-be robbery. Tracking it down led to the arrest of Tommie Lee Williams by cops with assistance from US Marshals.
Gun Violence and Gun Laws
Gun violence has become an epidemic in America. And many believe it is so because the citizens have the right to bear arms. This may be a good point as it is evident that countries where the citizens don’t carry arms barely have to fear gun violence as much.
So far in 2024, Mississippi is the state with the highest gun violence rate per 100,000 residents in the United States, at 29.7 percent, followed by Louisiana, at 28.2 percent. In comparison, Rhode Island had a gun violence rate of 3.1 percent, the lowest out of all the states.
Gun laws in America vary from state to state, which influences the differing rates of gun violence throughout the country. We know that there are fewer deaths by gun violence in states where gun safety laws have been passed. However, gun violence rates remain high in states where gun usage is easily permitted and even encouraged.
Unfortunately, despite evidence from other countries confirming that strict gun control measures reduce gun violence, the US remains reluctant to enact gun control laws.
