David Copperfield is being sued for over $2.5 million to repair damage to a New York City condominium he owns. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, August 6, by the board of managers of the Galleria Condominium — a luxury high-rise located on East 57th Street.
The board claims that Copperfield “trashed” his unit in the building before abandoning it in 2018.
David Copperfield Purchased the Condo in 1997
According to the lawsuit, David Copperfield, 67, initially purchased the NYC condo in 1997, after which he transferred ownership to Sky Tower, a Nevada shell company he owns, the following year.
The board says that the Magician left the “formerly pristine” condo, which also happened to be the largest in the building, located on the 54th floor, in such a “state of utter disrepair” that they’ll need $2.5 million in damages to repair the unit, neighboring units, and the building.

The board claims that on a “cosmetic level,” the state of the condo “plainly violates” the building’s upkeep requirements. The lawsuit even included photos of severe damage to the unit’s amenities, including the carpeting, walls, ceiling, bathtub, and more.
However, a representative for Copperfield has claimed that the photographs do not “reflect the current state of the apartment.”
“This is a simple insurance claim,” the rep said in a statement to PEOPLE. “The photographs included in the lawsuit don’t reflect the current state of the apartment. This is a court matter and will be handled in court.”
The Lawsuit Alleges Pretty Extensive Damage
According to the lawsuit, the condo board also claims that the damages to Copperfield’s unit extend beyond the surface level, stating that “the level of dilapidation and decay in Copperfield’s Unit far exceeds a purely cosmetic issue.”
The more extreme damages include “unrepaired water damage that architects say is so severe that it presents risks to the “concrete structure of the building.”
The water damage has led to the growth of mold and mildew. But it gets worse because they say it actively endangers other apartments in the building.
The board also alleges that Copperfield damaged a valve that exclusively services his unit. They say the damage resulted in approximately $2,500,000 of damages to the Condominium’s common elements and elevator systems.
The lawsuit claims that rather than fix the issues, Copperfield has only been making cursory repairs to the cosmetic issues. Meanwhile, the board struggles to understand why the magician would do that to his own unit, especially since he still owns it and is marketing it.
The board wants Copperfield to take responsibility for his actions. But since he has refused, they hope the lawsuit can help move things along.

How Much Is David Copperfield Worth?
David Copperfield is considered one of the richest magicians in the world, with a net worth estimated to be around $1 billion. Most of his fortune comes from his career as a magician, but he also dabbles in other ventures, including real estate.
His considerable net worth makes the damages the lawsuit is demanding look like child’s play, but Copperfield seems unwilling to fix his misdeeds, which is why the matter is being tabled in a law court.
