The author of “Sex and the City,” Candace Bushnell, has an interesting theory about why she thinks men are fond of “Sex and the City.” Bushnell believes that men are big fans of the show, even more than women, because they recognize other “assholes.”
Bushnell, who wrote the famed New York Observer column the hit show was based on, exclusively told Page Six: “The men loved it because men know other men are assholes!”
She said this while laughing at the American Ballet Theatre’s Fall Gala at the Lincoln Center in New York City before adding, “That’s my theory!”

Who Is Candace Bushnell?
Candace Bushnell was the author of the New York Observer column from 1994 to 1996 before she pivoted to writing novels. She wrote three based on the columns that were released from 1996 to 2011.
“They [men] always actually read the column,” she said. “The audience of the New York Observer [column] was 60, 65 percent men.” Those books later led to the creation of the beloved “Sex and the City” TV show, which followed fictional friends Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbes as they struggled with adulthood and their love lives in the Big Apple.
The series started airing on HBO in 1998 and continued until 2004. However, even two decades after it ended, people are still rewatching the show, with some even digging in for the first time.
What Makes “Sex and the City” So Special?
Bushnell also has a theory about why “Sex and the City” may resonate with many, even after so many years. “It’s really about a certain kind of woman at a certain time in her life, and I think that it gives women the freedom to think about their lives in a different way,” Bushnell said.
Bushnell, 65, also suggested that the main reason the show has remained relevant is that it gives “other women advice” with friendships, dating, and “real life.” “It’s about something that’s very real,” she said, then added that she believes “it’s more popular than it ever has been.”
Why Did Samantha Leave Sex and the City?
Kim Cattrall portrayed Samantha Jones. She did not return for the “Sex and the City” revival series “And Just Like That…” Cattrall’s decision not to return to the franchise was reportedly influenced by her strained relationship with co-star Sarah Jessica Parker.
Was Sex and the City Based on a Book?
“Sex and the City” is indeed based on a book of the same name authored by Candace Bushnell. The book, which contained a collection of essays that originally appeared in The New York Observer, was published in 1997 and offered a humorous and insightful look at dating and social life in New York City.
When Did the “Sex and the City” Show End?
“Sex and the City” stopped airing on February 22, 2004, after six successful seasons. The show won several awards throughout its run, including multiple Emmys and Golden Globes.
