On December 16, Bette Midler and her husband, Martin von Haselberg, will have been married for 40 years. However, when she wakes up on that day, her husband won’t be the first thing she sees.
Yes, Bette Midler is a firm believer in having separate rooms from your spouse. The actress has even named it as the secret behind the longevity of her union with Haselberg.
The Secret to Bette Midler’s Long Marriage
Waking up in separate rooms under the same roof as a couple sounds barbaric to some people. They believe that a spouse sleeping anywhere other than beside their partner is probably angry, sulking, or both.
Bette Midler does not agree. In an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Midler confessed that she and her husband have remained happily married for decades because they have separate sleeping quarters.

When asked what the secret to their happy marriage was, she said, “Separate bedrooms.” Then she added, “My husband snores.” The couple has maintained their habit of sleeping separately since the beginning of her marriage, and according to her, it has “been a fabulous ride.”
Meet Bette Midler’s Husband
Bette Midler and her husband, Martin von Haselberg, have been married since 1984. Von Haselberg was reportedly born in Argentina and is best known for his performance art group, the Kipper Kids, with Brian Routh.
During a February 2021 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” she confessed that they eloped after she proposed. She said about their wedding, “My wedding was two people, my husband and me. And, of course, the Elvis impersonator that married.” The intimate event took place at the Starlight Chapel in Las Vegas.
Midler also revealed that they did not have a photo from their wedding day for decades until the chapel closed its doors roughly five years ago.
She said, “There were no cell phones, of course, in 1984, and we had no pictures, but apparently, there was a photographer there, and when the Starlight Chapel closed its doors about five years ago … they sent us the pictures.”
Midler and Von Haselberg tied the knot after only six weeks of knowing each other. The actress said she grabbed “the first thing on the rack” for their wedding because it was impromptu, and she didn’t love the look.
Meet Bette Midler’s Child
Bette Midler has only one child, Sophie Von Haselberg, whom she welcomed on November 14, 1986. While the coronavirus pandemic raged on, Sophie married Harry J. N. Guinness in a small ceremony witnessed by 11 people.
Midler told Jimmy Kimmel, “My husband did the food. I did the flowers.” In October 2021, Sophie revealed to Today what it was like bringing Guinness home to meet her famous mother.
She said, “I mean, obviously to me, she’s always just gonna be my mom. Like, of course, I’m very, very aware of her standing in culture, but she is also my mom and I think because I’m an only child, bringing someone home means so much more because of that.”
Sophie has been following in her mom’s footsteps by pursuing a career in showbiz. Ironically, Midler was not initially in favor of her daughter getting into show business.
Midler said, “I was more than averse; I was frightened for her. She was just a little girl, and I made a terrible mistake by saying if you go into show business, I’ll kill you, and she took it very much to heart.”
Fortunately, all turned out well and Midler now thinks her daughter is “brilliant.” Sophie has appeared in “Irrational Man,” “Halston” and “Pose.”
