Parenthood is not easy; just ask Elle King, whose dad sucks at it. Some parents are lucky to grow alongside their kids while sharing a healthy bond, but others miss it entirely, ending up with scarred kids.
The latter rings true for Elle King and her father. The pair have a fractured relationship that stems from the mistakes the actor made while raising her. She recently talked about how he had her sent to fat camp as a child while highlighting other reasons they are still estranged.
King has made attempts to fix things between herself and her father, but she says he is unwilling. And when she gets fed up, allowing her anger to seep through their interactions, King says he is quick to point it out, so there’s been no progress.
Elle King on Her Fractured Relationship With Her Father Rob Schneider
Speaking in an edited teaser for an upcoming episode of Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, King, 35, talked about her childhood with her father, Schneider, 60, recalling how he sent her away to “fat camp” as a child.
According to King in the edited clip posted via TikTok on Saturday, August 10, she was quite heavy as a child. Her father’s solution was to send her to a fat camp. King shared that she got in trouble one year because she was nursing a sprained ankle and could not lose any weight. She called it “very toxic and very silly.”
In a different part of the clip, King revealed that she and her father can go four to five years without communicating. She also cited Schneider’s alleged opinions on social issues as part of the reason they do not get along.
Schneider has been known to take a Conservative stance towards social issues, especially regarding the LGBTQIA+ movement. King said, “He’s just talking out of his ass, and I want to use this opportunity to say that I disagree. I do not agree with what he says.”
Elle King’s Early Life
Rob Schneider was barely a part of Elle King’s childhood. She was mainly raised by her mother, former model London King, and stepdad, Justin Tesa, in Ohio. She reconnected with her father as an adult after their strained relationship as a child.
On the topic of the time she spent with him, she revealed that their summers unfolded on a movie set. According to King, the set was not the best place for a bored child to hang out. If she messed up a shot or was caught talking during a shoot or more, she was in trouble.
King also said that Schneider never remembered any of her birthdays. She said, “I spent my 18th birthday in a summer school, and they brought me cupcakes. When I came home, my dad forgot my birthday.”
As an adult, the singer tries to fix their relationship now and again, but her dad is not as enthusiastic, and it never works. King has since learned that “you can want someone to change so much. You can’t control anyone else’s actions you can’t control people’s feelings.”
King Explains What Led to Her Drunken Performance in January
The “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer’s discussion about her father comes not long after she addressed her drunken performance at Dolly Parton’s 78th birthday bash in Nashville earlier this year. King revealed she was in a secret battle with her mental health when she hit the stage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in January on Kaitlyn Bristowe’s “Off the Vine” podcast.
The singer was allegedly asked to fill in as the headliner in the eleventh hour because another singer had dropped out due to a snowstorm. King agreed even though, at that point, she said she had barely eaten, hadn’t slept in days, and was overwhelmed.
The unexpected task proved too difficult for King and she forgot the words to the Queen of Country’s song “Marry Me.” King recalled the embarrassing event. “I know now what I said. I said. ‘I’m Elle King, and I’m f—king hammered.’ And I got the curtain dropped on me.”
After the scandal, the country singer confessed that she “went to a different type of therapeutic program” after what happened. “I was very sad, and nobody really knows what I was what I was going through behind closed doors,” she told Bristowe. “And I just took that as, if it wasn’t this, it’s gonna be something else.”
King sought help because she did not want to keep feeling the pain she had been feeling. Unfortunately, the performance came up before she understood the gravity of her situation.
Why She Waited So Long To Explain
King waited for some time before she explained the reason behind her drunken performance because she wanted to secure her footing. What happened was disastrous, but it happened to a disoriented and tired Elle King.

She did not feel good about coming forward with an explanation until she was grounded again, hence the short wait. Following the performance, the Grand Ole Opry apologized on X (formerly known as Twitter) for the language King used.
While the news made rounds, Dolly Parton rose to her defense, apologizing on her behalf and urging fans to let it blow over because nobody was as mortified about it as Elle King was.
