Christina Applegate, in a recent conversation with Dax Shepard on the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, revealed a deep regret from her breast cancer journey. Speaking of her 2008 diagnosis and double mastectomy, she wished she had been more honest about her journey.
Recalling her initial reaction to the diagnosis, Applegate admitted to putting on a brave face despite fighting emotions. “I learned that lesson the hard way,” she said. “In 2008, when I had breast cancer at 36 years old, I went out, and I was the good girl talking about ‘Oh, I love my new boobs’ that are all scarred and f—ed up. What was I thinking?”
She continued, “My first interview was with Robin Roberts when I had cancer, and I’m sitting there lying my ass off about how I felt.”

She continued, “Everything I was saying was a freaking lie. It was me trying to convince myself of something, and I think that did no service to anyone. Yes, I started a foundation right away. Yes, I did all the things that I had to do, and we raised millions of dollars for women to get MRIs who were at high risk.”
She continued, “Yes, we did a good thing, but at the back of it, I was taking off my bra and crying every night. And I wish that I had said that.” Notably, Applegate’s revelations urge and encourage those in the public eye to be open about their cancer journey.
Christina Applegate’s Advice on Breast Cancer
Christina Applegate shared how she told a friend to delete a social media post. “She said if there’s anyone that can beat it, it’s going to be me,” Applegate said. “I immediately told my friend, ‘Take it down.'”
“I said, ‘Take it down right now because someone’s mom just died, and she was pretty strong. Someone’s daughter just died, someone’s sister just died, someone’s dad just died from this. Take it down.’ I said, ‘What you’re gonna do is you’re going to be honest every step of the way through your chemo, your radiation, all the stuff.'”

“It ended up that people really were helped by what she did,” added Applegate.
Christina Applegate in Coping with Multiple Sclerosis
During a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Christina Applegate revealed how she uses humor to navigate her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.
Reflecting on her entrance onto the show, she said, “I was thinking, wouldn’t it be funny if I came out and I did a somersault like Willy Wonka? And then I was like, ‘ta-da,’ you’d be ‘What a bitch. She is such a liar.’ I’m not. I literally am disabled.”
In response, Kimmel acknowledged Applegate’s dark humor, to which she humorously replied, “It’s how I live. It’s how I keep myself OK.” Despite Applegate’s lighthearted approach, she noted the emotional weight of her condition, saying, “I mean, it sucks. I’m not going to lie. And I think anyone who has MS isn’t going to be like, ‘This is the best thing that ever happened to me.’ “It really isn’t.
“Because that would make you have a really crappy life if that’s the best thing, the best thing that ever happened to you is something like this,” Christina Applegate joked.
Impact of MS Diagnosis on Applegate’s Motherly Role
In the same interview with Kimmel, the actress addressed the audience, saying, “That was a joke. You guys don’t get me!” The “Bad Moms” star further shared, “Look, did I want this? No. Do I wish this upon anyone? No. But, now it’s my normal.”
She also shared the challenges of being unable to fulfill certain maternal roles due to her condition. “She’s had to see the loss of her mom in the way that I was a mom with her,” Applegate said.
“Dancing with her every day, picking her up from school every day, and working at her school, working in the library. Being present out of the house, out of my bed. She doesn’t see those things anymore. This is a loss for her as well. And we’re both learning as we’re going along.”
