Taylor Swift’s legal team warns of legal consequences for a Florida college student, Jack Sweeney. Sweeney actively monitors the private jet movements of celebrities and public figures. He confirmed to CNN that he recently received a cease-and-desist letter from Swift’s attorneys. This was regarding the social media accounts he manages.
Sweeny is the same person who incurred the displeasure of billionaire Elon Musk by monitoring his jet. Musk had Sweeney’s “@ElonJet” account on X disbanded in December 2022. Although reinstated on X, Sweeney still manages accounts that trace the jet movements of notable figures like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and more.
Sweeney reportedly uses publicly available flight data from the Federal Aviation Administration to track the jets. Moreover, he uses flight signals tracked by aviation enthusiasts. Notably, his posts feature estimates of carbon emissions associated with the flights he monitors.
Last December, Katie Morrone, Swift’s lead attorney at Venable LLP, accused Sweeney of partaking in “stalking and harassing behavior” in a letter. The letter alleges that Sweeney discloses real-time and precise details about Swift’s location and plans on social media.

Furthermore, Morrone’s letter accuses Sweeney of recklessly disregarding the public safety of others in pursuit of financial gain and attention. The letter notes CNN’s coverage of Elon Musk offering Sweeney $5,000 to delete the account.
However, he declined. Instead, he counter-proposed $50,000, which he could use for college expenses or even to buy a Tesla. The letter emphasizes the situation as a “life-or-death matter” for Swift. This is due to her past challenges with stalkers and those with harmful intentions.
Additionally, the letter argues that disclosing her location information offers threats a “roadmap” to carry out their actions. Swift’s attorneys agreed that if Sweeney continues to post information tracking her jet, she must pursue “any and all legal remedies available to her.”
In an email sent to CNN, Sweeney mentioned that the letter came after headlines from media outlets and non-profit organizations regarding Swift’s carbon footprint. Sweeney also clarified to CNN that his intentions were not harmful, emphasizing that he compiles “public information.”

Despite appreciating Swift’s music, he showed commitment to transparency and public information. He added that due to the massive interest from Swift’s fans, tracking her jet is inevitable.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Swift should have “a decent expectation” of such tracking, whether or not he is the one doing it. On February 6, 2024, Swift’s representative declined CNN’s request for comment.
A spokesperson for Swift addressed concerns about the use of Sweeney’s jet-tracking accounts by Swift’s stalkers in the Washington Post. While the spokesperson didn’t comment on any ongoing investigations, they confirmed that the timing of stalkers’ actions is connected to Sweeney’s posts.
In recent weeks, interest in Swift’s upcoming travels has intensified. This is because fans are eager to see if she will return to the US from her overseas tour to attend the Super Bowl with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce.
