Selena Gomez, 31, the 31-year-old actor and founder of Rare Beauty, hosted her third annual mental health summit on May 1. According to her Instagram post, the event inspired her and left her inspired by the next generation. She added that she was hopeful and grateful to everyone who was part of the meaningful journey with her and her team.

During the panel segment of the mental health summit, Surgeon General Murthy joined Selena Gomez for a discussion on mental health. For this event, the actor wore an off-white cocktail dress designed by Australian fashion designer Tony Maticevski. The amber cocktail dress had a crinkled neckline that looked like a removable shawl.

Gomez’s cocktail dress also had an asymmetrical ham and internal boning for a corset-like appearance. Selena Gomez wore suede pumps by Manolo Blahnik to match the outfit. Notably, Tony Maticevski is the same designer who made Taylor Swift’s white dress, which she used in her music video “Fortnight.”

Furthermore, the renowned singer paired her artistic dress with jewelry by Tabayer, and Orlando Pita styled her hair into a sleek ponytail. Gomez’s outfit looked perfect for the event; it eluded simplicity and calmness.

Selena Gomez spoke about her mental health experience and how she was able to find her balance in the event. “I’ve had a very complex relationship with social media. I remember when it came out, it was the weirdest thing,” she said. “I didn’t believe it would do anything. And I recognized that a lot of feelings that I didn’t feel growing up just started happening.”

The “Only Murderers In The Building” actor also said that social media made her feel like she wasn’t good enough or that she wasn’t leading a good life. To help find her balance in all this, the actor said she took four years off social media.

“That was the best gift I could have given myself because I was actually aware of what was happening,” she said. “I would get phone calls from friends instead of, ‘Did you see my story?’ It was like, ‘Well then, tell me your story.’ It’s like now I can have communication.”

Selena Gomez also shared that she struggled with the world inside her head for a long time and felt lost and hopeless at times. The actor added that she received her first diagnosis of bipolar disorder in 2020, saying, “Almost immediately, everything changed.”

She continued, “I actually got the knowledge and the answers that I had been desperate for for so long. And understanding that obviously makes me become more aware of it, and I’m less afraid than I used to be.”

During the summit, Selena Gomez stated that campaigning for mental health makes her happy. She also added that there’s nothing more she’d love to be remembered for than the fact that she campaigned for mental health.

Rare Beauty was launched in September 2023, and a major element that sponsored its creation was the talented singer’s drive to talk about mental health. In an interview with WWD in 2023, Gomez said, “We center everything on wanting people to take care of themselves, love who they are, and have a safe place to share their stories.”

“I’ve heard really beautiful moments, like having someone walk through a divorce and actually being able to feel like she had a community to turn to. And then I will hear a young girl who has had self-esteem issues for so long, and she dealt with a lot of mental health. And it’s just incredible to see how Rare has created that space.… I always cry when we read the comments,” she added.

Furthermore, the product that Selena Gomez has been able to produce with her team is a kind of beauty that is focused on enhancing self rather than sticking to contouring and morphing your face. Also, the actor has been giving back to the community since her launch.

1% of the company’s sales goes into the brand’s nonprofit conglomerate. The funds are majorly to help create awareness and services on mental health to help undeserving communities.
