A sad incident happened in St. Louis, Missouri, where a car struck two women crossing the road on their way to a Drake Concert. The victims, 42-year-old Laticha Bracero and 21-year-old Alyssa Cordova, are a mother-daughter duo visiting from Chicago, Illinois.
In the early hours of Wednesday, February 14, 2024, a speeding 2020 Jeep Cherokee, violating a red light, caused the accident. The reckless driver “sideswiped” a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander and plunged into pedestrians, including the two women.
When the incident happened, the victims had just left a Drake concert and were walking in the crosswalk with the right-of-the-way. Notably, several others suffered injuries in the aftermath of this collision. The jeep, having struck pedestrians and a vehicle, crashed into another car.
Unfortunately, one of the women lost her life at the scene. The other succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, according to the police. Four other individuals, including two teenagers, suffered injuries. The 22-year-old Jeep driver is also at the hospital with injuries.

Christy Davis, who works at a nearby restaurant, made a statement to KMOV. He stated, “It’s sad and unfortunate that things like that are happening downtown, considering there are a lot of events and things people like to go to and come to our city.”
Currently, there are no filed charges. However, many noted the switch from a Drake concert to having a fatal accident. Recently, St. Louis has had a concerning increase in traffic fatalities, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
In 2021, the St. Louis police conducted roughly half the number of traffic stops compared to 2009, coinciding with a similar decrease in traffic-related deaths. The authorities and city leaders are aware of this alarming scenario.
Mayor Tishaura O. Jones acknowledges the urgent nature of the issue, explicitly citing “reckless driving.” On Wednesday, Jones informed the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the city struggles with reckless driving despite massive traffic and pedestrian infrastructure investments.
This ongoing challenge jeopardizes the safety and well-being of residents and visitors. Notably, the incident happened almost a year after 17-year-old Janae Edmondson experienced a life-changing accident. According to McClatchy News, Edmondson had an accident in downtown St. Louis during a volleyball tournament visit from Tennessee.

The incident happened when Edmondson and her family returned to their St. Louis hotel. A driver disregarded a yield sign, crashing into another car, which subsequently collided with Edmondson, leading to severe injuries.
Hospitalized as a result, Edmondson had the traumatic experience of having her legs amputated. Jeff Wismer, the Mid TN Volleyball Club’s assistant director, called the incident an “unthinkable accident.”
“Words can’t describe our community’s sadness,” Wismer said while speaking to WKYC. “I think we have words to describe our anger honestly, and we think that’s a healthy feeling that we have.” The Mid TN Volleyball Club assistant added, “A sense of loss for Janae and her family right now.”
He continued, “We’re so thankful and blessed that she is alive, and that may be the starting point for us. We are thankful that she’s here.” The St. Louis authorities are yet to charge the 22-year-old driver in the mother-daughter accident case. However, officials say the driver will face charges after his release from the hospital.
