One Dead, One Hospitalized After Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Sand Hole Mishap

A sad incident struck Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, as a young girl lost her life, and a boy now fights for survival in a local hospital. Both victims were trapped in a sand hole at 4424 El Mar Drive.

Chopper 4’s visuals showed a haunting scene on the beach, with a sand hole cordoned off by police yellow tape and encircled by caution cones. Fire Rescue officials say the young boy is at Broward General Medical Center.

The incident happened when a six-foot-deep sand hole collapsed on the children at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach. Authorities responded to a distress call around 3 p.m., reporting that a boy and a girl, approximately 9 and 7, dug a hole on the beach with some adults.

Sadly, the sand hole, measuring five to six feet deep, collapsed during the excavation. CBS News Miami obtained a video capturing the heroic efforts of Good Samaritans on the beach. In the video, they tried to rescue the trapped children from the collapsed sandhole. Also, they struggled to prevent further collapse by clinging to the hole’s walls.

The boy found himself buried up to his chest while the girl was entirely beneath him in the sand. Thanks to the swift response of the Pompano Fire Rescue Officials, they pulled the children out of the dangerous situation.

Regrettably, upon arrival at the hospital, they pronounced the young girl dead. However, the boy continues to be under care at Broward General, where reports say he is in stable condition. Notably, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is taking charge of the investigation, serving as the lead agency.

Experts argue that the girl’s death could have been prevented. They assert that lifeguards undergo training to maintain vigilance, particularly monitoring when children dig deep sandholes. They claim lifeguards ought to intervene should the holes pose any danger.

Ironically, the Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach features posted signs warning beachgoers about the absence of lifeguards. Moreover, they keep emphasizing swimming at one’s risk. Lifesavers are on posts scattered all across the sand.

A makeshift memorial for the girl now occupies one of the posts on the beach. Tom Gill, the Vice President of the United States Lifesaving Association, asserts that lifeguards could prevent such tragedy.

Gill emphasizes the potential prevention of the accident, stating, “If we had lifeguards there, could they have prevented this tragedy? I would say 100% yes.” Furthermore, Gill noted that lifeguards undergo training to instruct people not to dig holes exceeding two feet deep.

He also mentioned that lifeguards must intervene, explain the risks, and ensure everyone’s safety when faced with dangerous situations. However, the beach lacked lifeguards. Recognizing budget constraints, Gill said, “I understand budgets and costs. But at the end of the day, you are a beach town in southern Florida.”

He continued, “Let’s protect the people that are coming here, that are spending their money to vacation.” On Thursday, February 22, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea officials announced their intention to address the matter of lifeguards, ordinances, and a proposed memorial for the girl.

Mother and Daughter Fatally Struck by Car Running Red Light Post-Drake Concert

A sad incident happened in St. Louis, Missouri, where a car struck two women crossing the road on their way to a Drake Concert. The victims, 42-year-old Laticha Bracero and 21-year-old Alyssa Cordova, are a mother-daughter duo visiting from Chicago, Illinois.

In the early hours of Wednesday, February 14, 2024, a speeding 2020 Jeep Cherokee, violating a red light, caused the accident. The reckless driver “sideswiped” a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander and plunged into pedestrians, including the two women.

When the incident happened, the victims had just left a Drake concert and were walking in the crosswalk with the right-of-the-way. Notably, several others suffered injuries in the aftermath of this collision. The jeep, having struck pedestrians and a vehicle, crashed into another car.

Unfortunately, one of the women lost her life at the scene. The other succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, according to the police. Four other individuals, including two teenagers, suffered injuries. The 22-year-old Jeep driver is also at the hospital with injuries.

Christy Davis, who works at a nearby restaurant, made a statement to KMOV. He stated, “It’s sad and unfortunate that things like that are happening downtown, considering there are a lot of events and things people like to go to and come to our city.”

Currently, there are no filed charges. However, many noted the switch from a Drake concert to having a fatal accident. Recently, St. Louis has had a concerning increase in traffic fatalities, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

In 2021, the St. Louis police conducted roughly half the number of traffic stops compared to 2009, coinciding with a similar decrease in traffic-related deaths. The authorities and city leaders are aware of this alarming scenario.

Mayor Tishaura O. Jones acknowledges the urgent nature of the issue, explicitly citing “reckless driving.” On Wednesday, Jones informed the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the city struggles with reckless driving despite massive traffic and pedestrian infrastructure investments.

This ongoing challenge jeopardizes the safety and well-being of residents and visitors. Notably, the incident happened almost a year after 17-year-old Janae Edmondson experienced a life-changing accident. According to McClatchy News, Edmondson had an accident in downtown St. Louis during a volleyball tournament visit from Tennessee.

The incident happened when Edmondson and her family returned to their St. Louis hotel. A driver disregarded a yield sign, crashing into another car, which subsequently collided with Edmondson, leading to severe injuries.

Hospitalized as a result, Edmondson had the traumatic experience of having her legs amputated. Jeff Wismer, the Mid TN Volleyball Club’s assistant director, called the incident an “unthinkable accident.”

“Words can’t describe our community’s sadness,” Wismer said while speaking to WKYC. “I think we have words to describe our anger honestly, and we think that’s a healthy feeling that we have.” The Mid TN Volleyball Club assistant added, “A sense of loss for Janae and her family right now.”

He continued, “We’re so thankful and blessed that she is alive, and that may be the starting point for us. We are thankful that she’s here.” The St. Louis authorities are yet to charge the 22-year-old driver in the mother-daughter accident case. However, officials say the driver will face charges after his release from the hospital.

19-Year-Old Falls to His Death While Taking Pictures on Utah Cliff

Friends and family are paying tributes to the life of Jonathan Fielding, a beloved 19-year-old who lost his life recently. Fielding died on February 3, 2024, around 4 p.m. while taking photos at the remote Moon Overlook in Utah.

The tragic incident happened at the hard-to-reach point in Wayne County between Caineville and Hanksville. However, despite its secluded nature, Moon Overlook remains popular for hikers and sightseers.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office officially verified the death to KSL, a Salt Lake City NBC News affiliate. According to KSL, Fielding, originally not from Utah, had recently relocated to Orem. He visited the lookout, Moonscape Overlook, because of its rocky terrain, and with two friends to take pictures.

The sheriff’s office revealed that Fielding, known as “Jonny,” approached the cliff’s edge. Then, it gave way and crumbled beneath him. His uncle Russ Mayo described Jonny’s personality to KSL. “He’s got a huge smile; his personality was overwhelming in positivity,” Mayo said.

“He was there exploring with his roommates, taking photos, and just taking in the adventure.” Mayo continued, “He was documenting and did not get too close, and the shell broke away. He was trying to make his way back, and he just lost balance and fell.”

In addition, Mayo said, “It’s a tragedy for his family and those that he loved.” The 19-year-old’s uncle noted that Fielding was indulging in his passion. He said he was capturing photos amidst breathtaking scenery and sharing those moments with friends.

In a heartfelt initiative, friends created a GoFundMe page to cover the funeral expenses, surpassing its $20,000 goal by $6,500. The page sadly shows, “We are sad to announce that Jonathan Fielding has passed away.”

It continued, “He and his friends were hiking in Utah on Saturday, January 27, where he suffered a fatal accident. Jonathan is loved by many and was a great example of selfless love.” Following the incident, Fielding’s sister, Rebecca, shared a heartfelt post on Facebook.

She emphasized the importance of caution while hiking, hoping the incident would remind people to be careful during outdoor activities. “Jonathan thought he was invincible. He was so young, so happy, so full of life. Nothing scared him,” she said.

“This kind of thing was never supposed to happen to him. It doesn’t feel right being in a world without him, and I’d give anything to trade places with him.” Rebecca continued, “Never trust the ground on the edge of a cliff.”

She emphasized the precarious nature of the locations, describing them as “an eroding ticking time bomb.” Also, former classmates, teachers, and friends expressed condolences and paid their tributes on the Utah Valley Mortuary website.

A friend wrote, “Jonathan taught me that loving life is about so much more than having fun. It’s embracing every day with an open mind and heart and determination to live it to the fullest. Love you, Jonny.” Another friend stated, “He was always smiling, laughing, and embracing others.”

Maine Town Manager Dies After Saving His 4-Year-Old Son From Icy Pond

A Maine town manager died after rescuing his 4-year-old son when they both plunged through an icy pond on Friday, January 26, 2024. Kevin Howell, 51, and his son, Sawyer, were out for a walk when they crossed a portion of Etna Pond.

According to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office, the father-son duo broke through the ice around 6:30 a.m. The pond is less than half a mile from their Carmel, Maine home, the County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Howell was Carmel’s town manager, about 50 miles northeast of the state’s capital, Augusta.

The sheriff’s office reported that Howell was able to get his son out of the water onto more solid ice. Then, he instructed the boy to get his mother. Consequently, the boy ran home and told his mother, who, in turn, called 911. Afterward, she rushed to help her husband, grabbing an anchor and rope.

“The boy ran home and notified his mother. The mom told the young boy to stay at home,” the sheriff’s office said. “She called 911, and she rushed to help her husband.” Once the woman, Katie, reached the shore, she secured the rope and went to help her husband.

However, the sheriff’s office said she also fell through the ice and couldn’t get out. Following the incident, Jordan Norton, a sheriff detective, responded to the area after the 911 call. When he saw Howell’s wife in the water, he began “crawling across the treacherous ice” while holding on to the rope.

While he was able to help get the woman to safety, he did not see Kevin Howell. Consequently, the sheriff’s office called six Maine Warden Service divers and one state police diver to the scene. Two warden service divers began a search at about 1:40 p.m. and found Howell about 20 minutes later.

According to Howell’s biography on the Town of Carmel website, he and his wife moved to Carmel in 2014. The biography also stated that Howell enjoyed woodworking, expanding his family hobby farm, and outdoor sporting activities in his spare time. The website also described him as an “avid cook.”

The small town is grieving Howell, a prominent community member. Friends and colleagues described the late town manager as a “wonderful guy.” Daniel Frye, chairman of the town’s Board of Selectmen, told the Portland Press Herald that Howell “really believed in community.”

“That’s why he was such a perfect person for that town manager role,” Frye said. “He always wanted to make the town better. He was a standout guy.” “When he took it over, it was on the outs. He came in and brought the community together,” Frye added.

“Every year, it got bigger and better, in large part to Kevin’s work,” Frye said. “He was always working on the next project. His death is a big loss for the town.” In addition to being town manager, Howell participated in the state’s Emergency Medical Services. He was a member of the second EMS Blue Ribbon Commission.

“Mr. Howell was a visionary for his community’s development of a regional EMS system,” Maine EMS posted to Facebook. “We are very appreciative of his support for the Maine Bureau of EMS, the state of Maine, and the kindness he showed his community and colleagues.” The agency added, “Our deepest sympathies to his friends and family.”
