Meghan Markle appeared at SXSW in Austin, Texas, setting the internet ablaze with spurn speculations as she opted for another muted outfit. She wore a brown silky shirt and trousers to join Prince Harry at the Invictus Games. Markle lit up the festival with her significant appearance to mark International Women’s Day.
Media titans Katie Couric and Brooke Shields were in attendance on Friday, March 8, 2024. Markle dove into deep discussions on women’s representation in media, an issue close to her heart. However, it was the type of attire the Duchess chose for the event that quickly became a focal point of online discourse.
She opted for a sublime ensemble embodying breezy business casual with a silky pinstripe skirt set. The internet’s reaction to Markle’s fashion statement was sharply divided. As stated, the mother-of-two opted for a monochrome ensemble with two tones of brown while wearing £1200 wide-leg silk trousers from Gabriel Hearst.
According to reports, she previously wore them to the One Young World roundtable in 2022. However, she decided on the economic high street looks in her last few appearances. The Duchess went high-end and paired the look with £165 oversized Miu Miu sunglasses and a £365 Dani Blouse from New York-based designer L’agence.
Social Media Backlash
Undoubtedly, critics uttered their judgment with derogatory comments comparing her sophisticated attire to bedsheets. “It looks like wrinkled bedsheets,” one comment read. Others skeptically questioned, “Dreamy ensemble = Pyjamas?” and “Dreamy ensemble? Oh, do you mean it looks as though she slept in it?”

Adding to the negative comment on her outfit, Meghan Markle was mentioned in the same breath as Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. One commenter blatantly stated, “She’s a hot mess. Her hair is too casual, wrinkled outfit is no match for Catherine. The Princess of Wales is always dressed impeccably with class.”
Did Meghan Markle Get Credits for Her Outfit?
Despite the backlash, Meghan Markle received compliments and support from fans and admirers. She got flattering commentary, praising her choice of dressing and overall demeanor with remarks like, “I so much love her, her dressing and gesture,” and a simple yet powerful, “So pretty.”
The discussion surrounding her outfit somewhat reflected the substantive issues she addressed at the SXSW event, “Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen.” The event tackled various pressing issues, including the pervasive toxicity of social media.
Moreover, SXSW proudly invited Markle to be a speaker, calling her a champion for feminist causes, human rights, and gender equity. During the discussion, the Duchess shared her ordeals with social media, recounting the abuse she faced, particularly during her pregnancies and as a new mother.
Cruel Hatred She Received During Her Pregnancies
“I’m so excited to be here and to be with such incredible women, so much brilliance on this panel, and this is just such an amazing way to celebrate International Women’s Day,” she said. She then went on to discuss a wide range of topics.

Furthermore, she recounted her experience of cyberbullying while she was pregnant with her children, Archie and Lily. “You know us as moms, it’s such a tender and sacred time. You can either succumb to it or nearly succumb to how painful that is,” she stated.
Also, she spoke on the necessity for a safer online environment, especially for women and children. She also noted the tragic irony of women being the ones to perpetrate hate towards other women. Markle began by gushing about her “excitement” to join the panel.
Afterward, she touted the female-focused initiatives she and Prince Harry work on through their nonprofit, the Archewell Foundation.
Meghan Markle Spoke About Fighting for Women/Mothers in the Media
When asked about the Archewell Foundation’s decision to fund a recent report calling for “true representation” for mothers on TV, Markle explained that she and Harry had chosen to get involved with the project for “three key reasons.”
“On a personal level, I’ve just always loved understanding women and our stories and life experiences,” Meghan Markle said. “Oftentimes, as women, the way that we see ourselves is reflected to us,” she added. “Sometimes accurately, and sometimes, much to our disservice, inaccurately, in what we see in the media.”
“So, to be able to have the findings to uncover what we can do to propel that,” she continued. “To make sure women feel seen in a way that is reflective of who we are and how we move through the world felt important.”
“From a philanthropic standpoint with our foundation,” she concluded. “There is a lot of work to be done in supporting women and moms.”
Prince Harry sat with the audience in the vibrant atmosphere, supporting his wife. Being in the spotlight, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are often the subject of criticism and backlash.
