It’s been three decades since the beloved character actor John Candy succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 43. On the anniversary of his untimely death on March 4, his two children paid tributes to him on social media.
“30 years ago today … feels like both a lifetime with and without you. Miss you and love you forever,” shared Jennifer Candy-Sullivan, 44, in an Instagram post. The throwback picture she posted shows Jennifer resting on her father’s shoulder. Also, it captures her brother, Chris, grinning and lounging on an outdoor chair in the background.
In a different post, Chris Candy shared a snap of their father donning his iconic Hawaiian print. “All my love to my father today,” expressed Chris, 39, on Instagram. Like their late father, Jennifer and Chris are in the entertainment business. They both work as writers and actors, carrying on the beloved actor’s legacy.
Renowned for his memorable roles in ’80s comedies such as “Uncle Buck” and “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” Candy left an unforgettable mark on the entertainment world. His marriage to Rosemary Margaret Hobor, a talented ceramicist and abstract painter, lasted 15 years.

Reflecting on her father’s persona, Jennifer shared with Entertainment Tonight in 2015, “He was your everyday kind of guy. A great dad and very lovable. Very much similar to the characters that he portrayed on film.”
Sadly, Candy passed away in Mexico while filming the 1994 movie, “Wagon’s East.” “I was 9. It was a Friday,” Chris stated in a 2016 conversation with the Hollywood Reporter. “I remember talking to him the night before he passed away, and he said, ‘I love you and goodnight.’ And I will always remember that.”
Jennifer, who was 14 when Candy passed away, also shared notable memories of her last conversation with her father. “So I was talking to him on the phone, and I hate this, but I was slightly distant because I was studying,” she told the publication.
She continued, “So I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, I love you. I will talk to you later. Have a great night.’ then I hang up and I go back to studying.” Jennifer and Chris noted that heart disease runs in their family. “He always worked on his weight and health,” Chris mentioned during his interview. “And fortunately, he helped us to figure that out for ourselves.”

Jennifer and Chris have a striking resemblance with their late father. “Both my brother and I look like my dad at different times,” Jennifer told the Hollywood Reporter. “If you look at him when he was young, that’s Chris. And my dad slightly older; it is my face.”
She continued, “For me, it was being in touch with my feminine side when people would say, ‘You look just like your dad,’ and I was like, ‘Thank you …?’ And then they would say, ‘But you are much prettier than your dad!’ Sometimes, my laugh is exactly like my dad.”
“When you were with John, he did something very few brilliantly funny and famous people do: He laughed at other people’s jokes,” said Jon Turtletaub, who directed Candy in the 1993 sports comedy “Cool Runnings.”
