Drew Barrymore, famous for her debut at 11 months old to her role in “E.T. the Extraterrestrial,” reveals the harsh truth behind her childhood stardom. Despite her fame, she admits that being a child star was far from glamorous. In an interview, Barrymore discloses the challenges of growing up in the spotlight and its impact on her journey as a mom.
Born into a family of actors, Barrymore discloses her unique upbringing. She reveals how she navigated through her childhood, often parenting herself. Despite these challenges, Barrymore holds no grudges towards her parents.
Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Her Childhood
Drew Barrymore confesses to feeling disappointed in her parenting and realizing her mistakes upon becoming a mom. With two daughters, Olive and Frankie, Barrymore battles with deciding when or if to introduce them to the limelight.
She said, “I think kids really need to feel safe, and so when I see [this little girl], it’s like the first time in my life where I think I’m finally figuring out what it really takes to take care of kids. I didn’t know what that was when I was a kid. Barrymore completely understands the importance of her kids’ safety.”

However, she admits there is no definitive answer regarding when to allow her kids to pursue their passions in the public eye.
She said, “I always just say, ‘School plays, theater camp, everything, [yes]. But [no to] being out there in the public eye until …’ And then they say, ‘Well, what’s the number?’ And I always say, ‘I know you want an answer, and I know the fact that I can’t give you one that’s so specific isn’t satisfying, but it’s going to be a feeling, and it’s going to be when I think you’re ready.'”
Drew Barrymore’s Career and Parenthood
Drew Barrymore’s journey as a mom raises questions about introducing her children to the entertainment industry. She further noted that while she would support her kids, she’s unsure of the age at which they would go into Hollywood. She says, “I don’t know what number that is, but it’s probably north of 14, 15.”
Despite any reservations, Barrymore remains grateful for her career and the opportunities it has provided her. Contrary to the notion of the industry being toxic, she says she couldn’t appreciate every opportunity it has given her.

“When I first had kids, I remember people asking me like, ‘Well, would you want your kids to go into the business?’ And it always gave me such a sad feeling, as if this business was so toxic, like ew,” Barrymore said. “I just thought, that’s not how I feel about this business at all.”
Will Drew Barrymore’s Daughters Join Their Mom in Hollywood?
As Drew Barrymore contemplates the possibility of her daughters following her, only time can tell if they will. She humorously refers to them joining her as a “family business,” preferring the term “heirs” over the more critical “nepo-babies” discourse.
Speaking about her journey, Barrymore fondly recalls a People magazine caption from 1982 that labeled her family as “heirs.” “Oh, and look, it says ‘heirs,’ which I like. By the way, ‘heirs’ is much nicer than ‘nepo-baby’ or ‘family business,’ as I like to call it,” she added.
Although marriage and adulthood are future concerns for her daughters, Barrymore imagines what they might look like on their wedding days. Well, at least she knows what one of her girls might look like when it’s time for them to walk down the aisle.
In a recent episode of “The Drew,” Barrymore revealed that Olive made her nostalgic and shocked her by wearing her dress. Notably, this dress was from her 2012 wedding to ex-husband Will Kopelman.
Barrymore states, “The other night, I came home, and I was told that Olive has a surprise for me. And so I came in the room, and she was standing there in my wedding dress. And I looked at her, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, you look so beautiful.'”
She further noted that that was Olive’s second time wearing the dress, and she was saving it for Olive and her sister.
