If you’re a fan of “American Idol,” this update is for you! Carrie Underwood is set to make a notable return to the show as a judge in the upcoming season. According to an insider, Carrie Underwood will step in for Katty Perry.
Carrie Underwood, renowned for her Grammy-winning career in country music, will be alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. The trio will continue their roles as judges.
Why Is Carrie Underwood Replacing Katty Perry As “American Idol” Judge?
Earlier this year, Katty Perry announced her departure from the show. This announcement followed her conclusion of a seven-season tenure on “American Idol.” Perry shared her announcement on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” noting that the show has deeply connected her with the American audience.
Since Perry, 39, confirmed her departure in February, the Idol team has been searching for a new judge. Carrie Underwood was a perfect fit, as she earned a global superstar status as the most successful Idol winner.
Well, it’s been two decades since she auditioned in St. Louis for American Idol, and having the first-ever Idol on the panel is pretty interesting. Carrie Underwood embodies the true spirit of Idol as she is the definition of the Cinderella story.

With her, the future hopefuls will have the chance to receive advice from someone who has walked in their exact footsteps every step of the way. According to a source, one person eager to have Underwood join the show is Idol’s longtime host, Ryan Seacrest. Notably, Ryan Seacrest presided over Underwood’s winning season 20 years ago.
Fans anticipate Underwood’s presence on the 23rd season of “American Idol,” which is scheduled to premiere next year. As previously mentioned, Carrie Underwood will be returning with Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan as judges.
Other Celebrities Considered for the Position of “American Idol” Judges
In May, Katty Perry concluded her run as a judge on the show. Bryan revealed to a source that Pink, Miley Cyrus, and Meghan Trainor were considered for the role. He also noted that Perry’s departure presents a difficult task for her successor.
According to Bryan, “Katy was really perfect for that job, and they’re working hard to find someone who can match what Katy brought to the table.” Carrie Underwood seems to have the same energy and vibes as Perry.
Besides, she has become one of the show’s most successful alumni, earning eight Grammy Awards and achieving chart-topping success with four of her eight albums in the U.S. Next year’s season will mark a huge milestone as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of Carrie Underwood’s win.
