Larry Farrish Jr., a Louisville bus driver, noticed unusual behavior from one of his elementary school passengers. Knowing this was strange, he felt uneasy as he saw his passenger sitting alone with his hood over his head.
According to Farrish, the young passenger never does that. Usually, he’s out there waving to him as though he was parking an airplane. So, it was evident that something was off. As Levi, the young passenger, climbed aboard the bus, Farrish asked what was wrong.
Levi shared his distress — he didn’t have any pajamas for the special pajama day at school, where kids could wear their pajamas all day. Levi settled into his seat, and Farrish, checking at his rearview mirror, decided to make Levi’s day brighter.
Farrish knew precisely what to do. He said, “I saw Levi sitting back there alone, away from his friends, and there was no question what I was going to do. I didn’t want him to miss out on pajama day.” Farrish took an unexpected detour after he dropped off Levi and 40 other students at Engelhard Elementary School.

Driven by his compassionate impulse, he went to a nearby Family Dollar store to pick the perfect pajamas for Levi. Reflecting on the moment, Farrish, 35, shared, “I bought two pairs that I thought were his size. A brown and white pair with footballs and basketballs on them. Additionally, he purchased a fleecy grey pair of bottoms with a grey, white, and blue top.
He continued, “Levi has five siblings at home, so if he didn’t need two pairs, I figured somebody else in the family could use them.” Farrish made his way to the school, and upon entering the front office, he explained the morning’s event to an office assistant.
When they brought Levi into the office, his face lit up upon seeing Farrish. Excitedly, he screamed, “Hey, you’re my bus driver!” Farrish responded, “Hey, little man, I have some pajamas for you. Would you like to try them on in class?”
Overwhelmed by gratitude, Levi hugged Farrish and then, clutching to the pajamas headed back to class. The school principal, Ryan McCoy, expressed no surprise upon hearing about Farrish’s heartwarming gesture.
McCoy shared, “Mr. Larry is a great person and bus driver who truly cares about the students he drives. He intentionally builds relationships with them. Moreover, the smile on Levi’s face when Mr. Larry showed up at school with the pyjamas says it all.”
Jefferson County Public Schools recognized and celebrated Farrish’s Pajama Day kindness, featuring it on their website. The post gained more attention when they shared it on Facebook, prompting heartwarming comments from former students.
One comment read, “Mr. Larry is the absolute best. We are blessed with him as our driver for four years. Top-notch human.” Moreover, contrary to his previous occupation as a truck driver, Farrish expressed unexpected joy in his current role as a bus driver.
Levi, as quoted on the website, said he “did a happy cry” when Farrish brought him the pajamas. Admiring Farrish, Levi said, “I can tell Mr. Larry is nice, and his heart is full of joy.”
