“Black Panther” actress Connie Chiume is no more. She passed away at 72, leaving behind a grieving family and a world that loved her dearly. News of Chiume’s death became public after her family disclosed it on Instagram.

The family’s announcement included an expression of appreciation from her kids to the medical personnel who cared for her in her final days, amongst other things. The actress’ death came as a shock to fans, and many are curious about Chiume’s death. Here’s what we know.

How Did Connie Chiume Pass Away?

Connie Chiume reportedly died at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday, August 6. Her death followed a “period of illness,” according to what her family said in a statement posted on her Instagram page.

“Her children would like to express their deep appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff who provided exceptional care during her stay,” the statement read.

It also stated that details of the memorial and funeral services are forthcoming and will soon be available on Chiume’s social media platforms. In the meantime, the family will make the necessary arrangements.

    Highlights Of Connie Chiume’s Career

Connie Chiume may have passed on, but the things she did on earth will live on. She was a South African actress known for her iconic roles in film and television.

Some of her most popular works include “Rhythm City,” where she played the lead role of Mamokete Khuse between 2007 and 2016; “Black Panther,” where she played the role of Mining Tribe Elder; “Winnie Mandela,” and other SABC1 drama series.

Her stellar acting won her many award nominations, including a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress. Her career saw her play a range of roles that showcased talent and versatility, but her soul was what really endeared her to people. Little wonder tributes flooded in at the mention of her demise.

    Tributes For the Late Legend

After news of her demise went public, social media was quickly inundated with tributes from hearts she touched while alive. The South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who presented Chiume with the Living Legend award at the inaugural Cultural and Creative Industry Awards in March, was among those who shared tributes.

He wrote, “Her performances brought joy, inspiration, and a sense of pride to countless South Africans. She was more than an actress; she was a beacon of strength, resilience, and grace.”

The South African Government also paid tribute in an X post. “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered. #RIPConnieChiume,” the post read.

Lupita Nyong’o, who worked with her on “Black Panther,” wrote, “We have lost a library! May @conniechiume rest in peace and power.” Winston Duke wrote on X, “Rest in peace, my beautiful sister Connie Chiume. Thank you for the resilience and always inspired present work you delivered in your long, illustrious career.”

He added, “You always possesed gratitude and a generous, bold heart. We’ll miss you and are grateful for your time here. Safe travels on your continued journey.”

    Where Is Connie Chiume From?

As stated earlier, Connie Chiume is South African. The multi-talented actress was born and raised in Soweto, a township in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa.

Does Connie Chiume Have Any Kids?

Yes, Connie Chiume was a proud mother while she lived. She had four children, including two sons and two daughters whose names are not publicly known.

Chiume might have been famous as an actress, but she was quite private about her personal life, including her children. As such, she kept her family life out of the spotlight, leaving it focused on her career and public endeavors.

Connie Chiume’s death was a solid blow to the world of acting, but her legacy will live on in many hearts, and her kids will carry on her bloodline. It was a suitable end to a life well lived.
