The president of famous news media ABC News, Kim Godwin, announced her intention to leave the firm on Sunday, May 5, after three years of contentious tenure. According to employees, her leadership skills had a negative impact on the team’s general morale.
She made the decision known to employees via a memo. The sudden announcement shocked the entire team. In the memo, Godwin stated that she had resolved to retire from broadcasting Journalism.
Departure Announcement
“I’ve been lucky and privileged to experience nearly every role in this industry,” Godwin stated. “However, after much thought and consideration, I’m confident that this decision is the best for me as I focus on what’s ahead and what truly matters for me and my family.”
Godwin’s unexpected resignation followed CNN’s account earlier this week that Debra OConnell, a seasoned Disney executive appointed in February to head the ABC News team, had been evaluating her performance and privately expressed concerns about the firm’s current situation.
Reasons Resignation:
Since Kim Godwin assumed leadership in 2021, the state of affairs at the firm has taken a substantial hit, with several staff members expressing dissatisfaction with her management skills.
Over two dozen staff members and individuals associated with the outlet also expressed their frustrations to CNN, speaking anonymously as they were not permitted to discuss internal matters publicly.

Criticisms of Leadership
According to the employees who spoke with CNN, Godwin made numerous significant mistakes during her tenure. Some of these included adopting a detached management style, failing to create a clear, innovative plan for the newsroom, and removing the heads of the talent-relations division. She also formed a close-knit group of advisors that distanced other employees.
Despite “Good Morning America” maintaining strong ratings, its recent decline in viewership and competition with “CBS Mornings” for third place has caused concern among the team members.
Supporters of Godwin, who recently spoke to CNN, said her management approach was distinct from what the employees were used to under former management, which had a more involved style. However, her supporters admitted that she probably wasn’t the best choice to head the outlet.
Transition to New Leadership
OConnell, the new president taking over from Godwin, told the staff in a memo that “for the time being,” she will lead the outlet. She also appreciated employees’ “patience and understanding through this period of transition.”
OConnell stated she is “looking forward to working with the leadership team as we forge a new path forward together.”
OConnell added, “Since stepping into this position back in February, my aim has remained consistent, to equip every employee with the resources needed to enhance our achievements and uphold ABC News’s rich legacy into a future of infinite possibilities and creativity,”

Feedback regarding Godwin had reached OConnell in previous months. She had also privately expressed dissatisfaction with Godwin’s management and sought advice from industry experts on potential candidates to fill key positions and help address the issues.
Similarly, individuals familiar with the situation reported that discussions had begun with individuals interested in potentially taking over as the outlet president at the end of Godwin’s tenure.
Future Uncertainty and Legacy
Kim Godwin joined ABC News over three years ago as the first black woman to lead the TV broadcast News section. Her assignment was to enhance the section’s working ethic. Amazingly, instead of addressing the problems, she aggravated them.
This led to the sharp deterioration of the workforce and employee morale. However, the date for her departure from the network has yet to be revealed, as she was still overseeing an editorial meeting at a Disney outlet.
In February, Disney announced Godwin’s contract renewal to lead ABC News despite OConnell’s appointment to a new section that supervises Godwin’s operations. This raised doubts from chief executive Bob Iger regarding her management of the news department.
Following Godwin’s designation, OConnell expressed her internal dissatisfaction about being separated from Iger and criticized what she perceived as Disney’s excessive control. On Sunday, a Disney correspondent declined to comment on whether the company would compensate her for the time left in her contract.
In her farewell message to the staff, Godwin wrote, “I depart with confidence and best wishes for the entire team’s ongoing success.”
