Keanu Reeves is racing again. The “Matrix” star thrilled fans on Saturday, October 5, 2024, when he participated in a 45-minute race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was competing in the Toyota GR Cup in what was his first-ever professional race. An army of fans were eager to see how well the Hollywood star would perform.
The Toyota GR Cup is an amateur-focused racing series for “car enthusiasts and aspiring racers to former race car drivers now in retirement,” according to Toyota’s website. Reeves secured his place in the race after finishing 31st out of 35 cars. After almost an hour of a highly competitive first race, the 60-year-old actor took 25th position among the 33 racers.
Fans had their hearts in their mouth at one point in the race when Reeve’s car ran into some trouble. Midway into the race, his car spun onto the grass just as it was to get past Turn 9. Thankfully, there was no collision, and he was able to get back into the race soon afterward. During the race, Reeves reached as high as 21st place at one point.

Reeves remained hopeful as he participated in the second round of the race the very next day. This time, he was one step better, finishing 24th. Also, the actor didn’t run individually in the first race. He teamed up with Cody Jones, fellow actor, and manager of the popular YouTube channel Dude Perfect.

Keanu Reeve’s foray into professional racing didn’t come as much of a surprise. The “John Wick” star has never hidden his love for the sport. He participated in an auto racing competition in 2009 when he won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach’s celebrity race.
Also, in July, Reeves and his girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, attended the MotoGP Liqui Moly Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland in Germany. In July 2022, he was at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix qualifying race. He spoke to the media after the race, which he described as “wet” but “thrilling.”
“It was absolutely amazing to be that close. Silverstone and rain, perfect,” he added. “I think being that close to it, just seeing the speed and the way that they’re going at the turns and exiting the turns is something unbelievable,” he also remarked.
Another proof of his love for the sport is the film “Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story,” which he produced and hosted. The project is a documentary about the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. So, the Indianapolis racing event was the first of many professional racing competitions for Reeves.
Before the event, Indianapolis Motor Speedway posted a video teaser reminding race lovers of the actor’s participation. The video which they posted on Instagram had the caption, “Keanu Reeves? Racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? Even movie stars have that itch to compete at the Racing Capital of the World.”
