A nine-year-old child passed away after getting mauled by her family’s Cane Corso on Friday, August 9, in Aripine, Arizona. The tragedy happened just outside her family home, according to a Navajo County Sheriff’s Office August 12 press release.
The nine-year-old was reportedly attacked after she ran outside the Aripine home “to turn off a water spigot.” Notably, Aripine is about 250 miles northeast of Phoenix. The young child has not been publicly identified. However, the attack is a reminder of how deadly man’s best friend can be. Especially when left unsupervised with a child.
Details of the Tragedy Involving Cane Corso
The tragedy happened on August 9, a Friday evening, around 6:30 p.m. The now-late child was home with many family members before she went outside to turn off the water spigot. However, the dogs allegedly attacked her “for unknown reasons,” leaving her with “severe physical trauma.”
Her family members and first responders tried to provide her with emergency first aid services. But their efforts were in vain. She succumbed to her injuries.

“Our hearts just pour out for this family, not only here in the headquarters at the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, but the guys who work on the street that responded to this,” Deputy Brian Swanty told Fox 10. “This is not the type of call that anybody ever wants to be involved in.”
The sheriff’s office is investigating the “tragic incident” and has said no additional information will be released due to the ongoing investigation.
The Cane Corso Attacked for Unknown Reasons
Authorities are still trying to figure out what may have prompted the Cane Corso to attack the little girl. The incident is even more baffling because the dogs allegedly “routinely interact and are familiar with the family and children.”
In an update on the case from August 14, Navajo County Sheriff’s Office PIO Tori Gorman told PEOPLE that there were four Cane Corso dogs, two adults and two puppies. According to Gorman, the dogs have been seized from the home and will be examined for the investigation. She added that the dogs will unlikely be returned to the family.
Gorman also told PEOPLE the department has “not been given an update as to what will happen with the dogs” in regards to being taken in or euthanized.
A Similar Tragedy Happened Weeks Before
The tragedy involving the unidentified nine-year-old girl came weeks after a similar incident happened to a 6-year-old Ohio boy. He was reportedly mauled to death by his family dog in an attack that may have involved other dogs in the home.
The boy, identified as Jaxson Dvorak, was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
“My heart is shattered,” Jaxson’s mother, Brittany Dvorak, said on a GoFundMe page created to help offset funeral and other expenses. “My world has collapsed. I feel like I’m in a really bad nightmare, and I’m just trying to wake myself up, but it’s not working.”
The boy was set to start 1st grade in the fall, and his two brothers have been grieving his loss, saying they no longer “have him to look up to or play with.”
