The love affair between Kate Middleton and Prince William was a big secret in their university days, and the love birds were committed to keeping it so for as long as it took. However, according to accounts in a royal biographer’s new book, it took a mischievous friend at a drinking game to let the cat out of the bag.
In his newly released work, “Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen,” royal biographer Robert Jacobson describes how the couple met. He also details how a secret relationship blossomed between them and how a drinking game forced out one of their most valuable secrets at the time.
In yet another enthralling piece of royal chronicles, Jacobson leveraged his privileged influence within the royal household to uncover facts about the kingdom’s most celebrated princess, Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales.

The book details her early life and progresses gradually until it unveils “an attractive, clever, and ambitious girl from unexceptional beginnings” who falls in love with a wealthy prince in college.
Truly, the pair’s love story began in 2001 when they were first-year students at the prestigious University of St. Andrews. First, they begin as just friends. Thereafter, feelings begin to blossom.
Prince Williams and Kate Middleton’s College Love Affair
During their friendship days, Prince William and Kate Middleton were attached to other people. Therefore, they had no initial intention of taking their friendship a notch higher. In particular, Prince William had been seeing Carly Massy-Birch, a fellow student of his.
However, the relationship didn’t last long. Yet, they maintained a healthy friendship afterward. Kate Middleton would later be the one to fill the vacuum Massy-Birch left. So, when they finally got into a romantic relationship, they both decided to keep it under wraps.
For a long time, even though their close connection was evident to all, fellow students had no concrete confirmation of Prince William’s secret love affair. “Among the student community, it was an open secret that they were a couple,” Jacobson wrote in his book, which was released on August 6, 2024.
The biographer also narrated how the lovers did almost everything together, from walking to class and shopping to spending nights at home listening to music. Prince William also revealed during his 2010 engagement interview that they lived together as roommates with other friends.
“We lived with a couple of others, as well, and it just sort of blossomed from there, really,” he stated. “We just saw more of each other, hung out a bit more, and did stuff.”
How Prince William’s Secret Love Affair Was Revealed
Later, in one of the relationship’s most testing episodes, Prince William and Kate Middleton were forced to reveal their relationship. It happened during a dinner party with friends and Prince William’s ex, Massy-Birch, in attendance, amongst others.
During the party, the friends decided to play “Never Have I Ever,” a popular drinking game in which participants had to disclose information to escape the bottle. Probably unintentionally, Massy-Birch, when it got to her turn, said, “I’ve never dated two people in this room.”
According to Katie Nicholl, another royal biographer who detailed the event in her book, “The Making of a Royal Romance,” a guest at the party believed that Massy-Birch made the statement because she knew or suspected that Prince William was dating Kate Middleton.
The unidentified guest noted that Prince William, who wasn’t pleased by Massy-Birch’s action, “shot a thunderous look” at her before muttering, “I can’t believe you just said that.” It would be the first time Prince William and Kate Middleton would confess their relationship in public.
How Old Were Prince William and Kate Middleton When They Married?
Prince William and Kate Middleton dated for nearly ten years before marrying on April 29, 2011. By then, Prince William was 28, while Kate Middleton was 29. However, it wasn’t always a smooth ride leading to the wedding day.
In April 2007, their relationship went through a testing period as they both went their separate ways after dating for five years. The media could only speculate as to why they called off their relationship.
Some said Kate Middleton couldn’t cope with the media attention surrounding the relationship. However, in their engagement interview years later, William told a reporter that one or both of them just wanted “a bit of space.”

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Wedding Surprise
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s much-awaited wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in London. Commentators tagged it as “the greatest and grandest royal affair” since the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
But what stood out in the ceremony was a surprise performance from the couple. To the amazement of the over 1900 guests, the couple danced to “You’re the Only One I Want” from Grease.
The lovers showcased their romance by pointing at each other and mouthing the song’s lyrics as they swayed around together. The performance wowed the audience, and according to Jacobson, “It brought the house down.”
Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Kids
The royal couple’s marriage has now produced three kids. They had their first child, Prince George, 11, in 2013. Their daughter, Princess Charlotte, 9, came two years later, and then came Prince Louis, 6, in 2018.
The three young royals have already begun taking part in royal engagements. However, Kate Middleton is wary of exposing them to the spotlight too soon. She wants to give them a normal childhood.
