Bruce Willis Was Diagnosed With Frontotemporal Dementia in 2023
In 2022, Bruce Willis’ family put out a statement saying that he was diagnosed with aphasia, which is a language impairment. They also mentioned that he wouldn’t be acting anymore.
Then, about ten months later, in 2023, they came out with another statement saying that Bruce got a more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). After Bruce’s family shared his FTD diagnosis, the media went into a frenzy, trying to explain what FTD is to people who might not have heard of it before.
They described it, and the connection between aphasia and FTD was everywhere. They didn’t quite get the facts straight and made it seem like aphasia and FTD were separate things. Plus, they used the term “dementia” instead of “degeneration,” which caused even more confusion.
It’s clear that there’s a lack of awareness about FTD and PPA, and the best way to fix that is by spreading more knowledge about it. However, Willis’ family bravely shared their story and brought attention to this disease.
Emma Willis Has Been Supportive and Transparent About His State of Health
Ever since Bruce’s family, which includes his ex-wife Demi Moore and their lovely daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, shared his FTD diagnosis, his wife Emma has been so open and honest about how it’s affected their lives.
Bruce Willis’ wife often takes to Instagram to share these heartfelt moments and memories with the actor. She’s been open about her journey as an FTD caregiver and has become a strong supporter for both those with the diagnosis and their loved ones.
Furthermore, she wrote a heartfelt piece for Maria Shriver’s newsletter, The Sunday Paper, in November 2023. “As hard as it was to come forward about Bruce’s FTD diagnosis,” she wrote. “I knew I needed to raise my voice to bring awareness to this disease.”

Bruce Willis’ Wife Emphasizes the Difference Between Alzheimer’s and Frontotemporal Dementia
Emma emphasizes that the world needs to know that not all dementia is Alzheimer’s and that not all dementia impacts memory.
“I wouldn’t wish an FTD diagnosis on anyone,” Emma noted. But our journey has changed how I perceive the world.” She continued, “I’ve become more compassionate. I find that I’m able to hold more space for what others might be going through. I’m holding gratitude as well as grief. There is power in becoming an advocate for this community.”
