As you may know, the Oscars, Hollywood’s most prestigious night, dazzled with its star-studded red carpet and awards. However, amidst the glitz and glam, the absence of A-listers like Leonardo DiCaprio, Eva Mendes, Matt Damon, and Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki on March 10, 2024, sparked speculations.
It’s no news that DiCaprio is a household name in Hollywood. Despite his film “Killers of the Flower Moon” being in the running for Best Picture and gaining an impressive ten nominations, DiCaprio was absent.
Notably, his absence wasn’t due to a lack of recognition for his work. On the contrary, his role as Ernest Burkhart in “Killers of the Flower Moon” was widely acclaimed. However, it did not earn him a nomination for Best Actor. Yet, fans interpreted his absence as a snub, given his performance and the film’s recognition.
DiCarprio’s Work Commitment and Gosling’s Red Carpet Surprise

Meanwhile, several people anticipated the appearance of Canadian actor Ryan Gosling and his wife, Eva Mendes, on the red carpet. However, Gosling’s unexpected choice to walk with his sister, Mandi Gosling, caught everyone off guard.
Gosling’s Oscar Journey
Notably, Gosling’s presence at the Oscars was more than his nomination for playing Ken in the “Barbie” movie. Scheduled to perform the nominated song “I’m Just Ken,” became a talking point of the Academy Awards.
After the awards, Gosling gave a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the world premiere of “The Fall Guy” at SXSW in Austin. He disclosed that his partner Mendes and their daughters, Esmeralda and Amada, attended the dress rehearsal before the Oscars and gave him invaluable feedback and support.
Gosling cherished the memory, noting the importance of his family’s presence and support during such crucial moments before the Oscars. Moreover, he mentioned that his daughter’s fascination with Barbie and lack of interest in Ken initially drew him to the role. He said, “It was beautiful to have them there at the end.”

Mendes’ Instagram Post
At the Oscars, Ryan Gosling’s live performance of “I’m Just Ken” stood out. This happened despite narrowly missing the Best Original Song Award for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” Although Mendes didn’t join Gosling on the red carpet, her support for him was massive.
On Instagram, she shared a photo wearing a pink blazer similar to Ken’s iconic attire from “Barbie.” She complemented that with a stylish black cowboy hat. Alongside the photo, she wrote a heartfelt note to Gosling, overflowing with pride and admiration for his achievements.
She said, “You took Ken all the way to the Oscars, RG. Now come home. We need to put the kids to bed.”
Kimmel’s Dilemma
Before the event, Jimmy Kimmel, the evening’s host, deliberated on humorously engaging with the celebrities at the Dolby Theatre, all while treading without crossing any lines. Matt Damon, a long-time friendly foil of Kimmel, was a prime candidate for playful banter.
Despite Damon’s role in the winning film, “Oppenheimer,” he found himself in an odd position: not receiving an Oscar nomination while his co-stars did. Kimmel couldn’t resist but poke fun at this scenario, hinting that this might be a recurring motif throughout his hosting gig.
Surprisingly, Kimmel confirmed the unexpected news that Damon wouldn’t be present at the Oscars. When pressed for an explanation, Kimmel couldn’t help giving a dash of humor at Damon’s expense. With a grin, he said Damon’s absence was due to a mundane reason: he couldn’t get a ticket.
Kimmel added, “It’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard.” Adding to the humor, he shared that Damon previously inquired about attending. However, he was informed that only nominees could come.
Damon Shines Beyond the Oscars
Unbothered about his absence at the Oscars, Matt Damon ensured he didn’t miss the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Hosted by Radhika Jones at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Damon arrived with his wife, Luciana Damon. Luciana didn’t disappoint as she embodied style and sophistication during the festivities.
