Priscilla Renea Hamilton, professionally known as Muni Long, is a talented Singer and songwriter who saw her commercial breakthrough with her 2022 single “Hrs and Hrs.” She has worked with several top artists, including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and the now-defunct Fifth Harmony.
In an interview with Complex, the talented singer spoke about how one of Rihanna’s smash hits came to be. She claimed she wrote Rihanna’s 2010 breakup power ballad “California King Bed.” While Rihanna hasn’t addressed it, Long’s claims give credence to her remarkable talent.
Muni Long Talks About What Inspired the Title “California King Bed”
In an interview with Complex on Monday, March 11, 2024, Muni Long discussed the origin of “California King Bed.” Long recounted that she was living in Miami and working out of “We the Best Studio” with Jermaine [Jackson] from The Runners. “They had the chords and everything,” she said. “I listened, I went back into the room, and they gave me the file.”
Long continued to speak about how she was planning to move to Los Angeles in California; “At the time, I was planning to move to L.A.,” she recounted. “I was online looking for furniture when Maine came in the room, and he’s like, ‘What you got?’ I didn’t have anything because I had been messing around, and I looked at my computer.”
She recalled how she came up with a title; “I said ‘California King Bed,’ and he said, ‘OK,’ and then he left. So I was like, ‘Oh, now I gotta write that.'”

She Made the Song in 10 Minutes
During the interview, Muni Long also talked about how she wrote the song in haste. “I wrote the song in like 10 minutes,” she said. “I was like, ‘Turn it up, let me get this done real quick,’ so I could go back to looking for my furniture.”
Furthermore, Long said the song was originally going to be pitched to Kelly Clarkson. However, that eventually didn’t happen because a few months later, her publisher told her that the song was going to Rihanna.
“I was super excited. She was on tour at the time, but she cut the song, and the rest is history,” Long said. “You wouldn’t think that she would do something like that.” Muni Long also spoke about the impact that had on her career.
“What that did for the trajectory of my career as a creative was massive,” she noted. “After that, I did work with her in the studio many times, but that was my first entry point into my journey with Rih.”
Muni Long Describes the Song’s Impact on Her Career
While talking about the song, Muni Long noted how it brought her into the limelight and skyrocketed her career. Also, she said she has worked with Rihanna many times with Rihanna since “California King Bed.”
Similarly, the “Made for Me” crooner said she has worked with other stars, including Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez. “Working behind the scenes for so many years felt like I just had a job,” she added. “When I unplugged from that way of thinking, I started to see a shift.”
Some Successful Projects Long Had Worked on Behind the Scenes
In addition to “California King Bed,” which appeared on Rihanna’s 2010 album “Loud.” Muni Long said she also wrote RiRi’s 2011 song “Watch n’ Learn” from the album “Talk That Talk.” Long also has song credits on Fifth Harmony’s song “Worth It” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Love So Soft.”
In addition, she has credits on Ariana Grande’s “Imagine,” Selena Gomez and the Scene’s “Who Says,” and Pitbull’s “Timber.”

Muni Long And Her Grammy Journey
After working with several global musicians behind the scenes, Muni Long relaunched her musical career in 2019. With such incredible talents, it’s no surprise she’s earned three Grammy nominations. As a result, she took home a Grammy Award for best R&B performance for her hit single “Hrs & Hrs” in 2023.
Her song “Hrs & Hrs” became a viral hit and also a platinum seller dedicated to the power of love. The Los Angeles-based musician put in the self-work and eventually signed to Capitol Records, where she released her debut album, Jukebox.
Muni Long’s Recent Achievements
After establishing her independent label, Supergiant Records, Muni Long released her second studio album, “Coloured,” independently in June 2018. The album saw her exploring country soul genres. After adopting the stage name Muni Long, she had her commercial breakthrough with her 2022 single “Hrs and Hrs.”
The song peaked in the Billboard Hot 100 top 20, leading her to sign with Def Jam Recordings. Furthermore, the hit song won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
