The UAE is urging the US to push for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war. On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian-militant group Hamas, designated a terrorist group by the US and European Union, perpetrated an attack in southern Israel. As a result, 1,200 people died, and over 240 others have been abducted.
In response to this attack, Israeli troops displaced two million people, according to Hamas-run health authorities. Also, there are over 26,000 casualties, about 70% being women and children, with more than 64,000 individuals injured, and the toll continues to rise. The scope of the conflict and its humanitarian impact has reached unprecedented levels.
By mid-December, the World Bank estimated that Israeli bombardment had damaged or destroyed over 60% of Gaza’s infrastructure. Therefore, reconstructing this infrastructure would span several years.
Amid the ongoing three-month-long conflict, the UAE has called on the US to support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The UAE warns that there is a high risk of a regional conflagration. Similarly, several Arab states have pushed for a truce, especially after the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, made a rare move to warn the Security Council of a global threat from the war.

“This war will result in a complete breakdown of public order and increased pressure for mass for Egypt,” Guterres warned. “I fear the consequences could be devastating for the entire region.” Robert Wood, who represented the US at the Security Council, said the US would not give up on its aim of removing Hamas from the region.
He explained that America wanted “to break the cycle of unceasing violence.” However, Wood noted that a ceasefire now “would only plant the seeds for the next war because Hamas has no desire to see a durable peace.” He added, “Our goal should be to stop the war forever.”
Despite pleas, both the US and Israel oppose a ceasefire because they believe it would only benefit Hamas. Washington, instead, supports pauses to protect civilians and allow for the release of hostages taken by Hamas.
United Arab Emirates (UAE) Deputy Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab warned that the Security Council is growing isolated. He said the Security Council “appears untethered” from its mandate to ensure international peace and security through a ceasefire.
UAE Ambassador to the UN, Lana Nusseibah, emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire. She stated, “We need a humanitarian ceasefire now; we cannot wait another 100 days.” She urged the US to play a critical role in easing tensions. “The risks are high; the war in Gaza is a clear open wound that destabilizes the region,” she emphasized.

This warning comes from the US’ key ally in the Middle East, reflecting growing regional tensions involving Israel, Iran, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, and US forces. This has brought about a series of attacks and proxy wars with the Jewish state, contributing to widespread destruction and an increasing civilian death toll.
Also, the US Central Command reported that Iran launched multiple ballistic missiles and rockets targeting the al-Assad Airbase. This attack caused injuries to US personnel and damaged the base. Iran, in turn, accused Israel of a deadly rocket attack in the Syrian capital, Damascus. As a result, prompting a strike on what Iran claimed to be an Israeli spy base in Iraq.
Simultaneously, Iranian-armed Houthi rebels in Yemen disrupted global trade by attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea despite US-led military action. “If the objective is not to increase extremism and terrorism in our region,” Nusseibah warned. “People would describe this as the case study for how not to do it.”
However, the administration vetoed a United Nations peace proposal by the UAE in December. Also, Biden’s administration has refrained from demanding a halt to the Israeli military campaign.
Due to its conditionality on Israeli support for a Palestinian state, Israel’s far-right government pledged to continue its offensive. Israel rejected the US-backed proposal by five Arab nations for post-war Gaza reconstruction.
