Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker is urging his Texan counterpart, Greg Abbott, to stop busing migrants to his city due to the incoming winter storm. In the last week, temperatures in Chicago have dropped significantly, and temperatures are still expected to reach a dangerous low. However, this has done little to stop the flow of migrants into the city.
In a letter to Abbott’s office, Pritzker said, “I plead with you for mercy for the thousands of people who are powerless to speak for themselves.” He added, “Suspend your transports, and do not send any more people to our state.”
Since the middle of 2022, Abbott has sent over 30,000 migrants to Chicago. In a bid to relieve overwhelmed border towns, he has been sending migrants to sanctuary cities, such as Washington D.C., New York City, and others.
So far, Chicago has been using warming buses to keep migrants warm during cold nights. “Abbott is putting hundreds of children’s and families’ health and survival at risk due to his actions,” Pritzker fumed.

“We should be able to come together in a bipartisan fashion to urge Congress to act,” Pritzker wrote. “But right now, we are talking about human beings and their survival.” The governor added, “I hope we can at least agree on saving lives.”
The city provided an update, saying it has received more than 33,000 asylum seekers. Of those, 317 await placement, with 249 at O’Hare International Airport. Also, about 68 are staying at a warming shelter. The city decried Abbott’s move, saying it can only take so much pressure.
Therefore, Pritzker’s state is trying to prevent companies from leasing their planes to Texas. He believes the state has deployed a strategy to deter the plane drop-offs. Also, Pritzker has tried to publicly pressure the White House to mitigate the crisis, writing to Biden that Illinois is in an untenable situation.
Afterward, Abbott’s Spokesman, Andrew Mahaleris, responded to the letter. “Governor Pritzker was all too proud to call Illinois’ the most welcoming state in the nation,'” he said. “Until Governor Abbott began transporting migrants to Chicago.”

“Instead of complaining about migrants sent from Texas, where we are also preparing to experience severe winter weather across the state,” Mahaleris said. “Governor Pritzker should call on the president to do his job and secure the border, something he continues refusing to do.”
“Until President Biden steps up and does his job to secure the border,” the spokesman continued. “Texas will continue transporting immigrants to sanctuary cities.” Despite facing a lawsuit over moves to secure the southern border by installing a buoy, Abbott continues to defend his actions.
The governor claims that his state is working on stopping the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas. Meanwhile, Chicago and other cities have appealed for help from the federal government, including billions in financial aid. Migrants from Central and South America include individuals and families seeking a better life in the U.S.
