Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley raised concerns about Donald Trump’s mental fitness to serve as president. This question stemmed from an incident where Trump confused her with former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while discussing the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Haley recounted the episode at a rally, emphasizing Trump’s repeated mentions of her in connection with the Capitol riots. She pointed out that she wasn’t in office during the January 6 riot and asserted that Trump became confused, intending to refer to Pelosi.
“Trump is at a rally, and he’s going on and on, mentioning me several times,” Haley said. “Questioning why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots. Why didn’t I handle January 6 better? I wasn’t even in office then.”
“They’re saying he got confused. That he was talking about something else,” the former South Carolina governor added. “That he was talking about Nancy Pelosi. He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario.”

Haley addressed a Keene, New Hampshire crowd, stating, “The concern I have is— I’m not saying anything derogatory.” She quipped, “But when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do it.”
These remarks followed Trump’s remarks about Haley during a Concord, New Hampshire rally. The former president dismissed Haley, calling her a “globalist fool.” In addition, Trump suggested that he would not pick her as his running mate should he win the Republican presidential nomination.
During his campaign, Trump incorrectly claimed that Nikki Haley was responsible for Capitol security on January 6, 2021. However, he confused her with Pelosi. Aside from repeating her name four times, Trump made unsubstantiated claims about offering 10,000 troops, a statement debunked by the January 6 committee.
“By the way, they never reported on the crowd on January 6,” Trump started. “You know Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, they- do you know they destroyed all the information?” Trump continued at the rally, “All of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it. All of it.”

“Because of various reasons, such as Nikki Haley being in charge of security,” he added. “We offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, National Guards, whatever they wanted.” “They turned it down. They don’t want to talk about that. These are very dishonest people,” Trump concluded.
The Nancy-Nikki incident is not the first instance of Trump confusing his political rivals. Trump frequently confuses President Biden with former President Barack Obama. However, Trump has since claimed that this tendency to mix the two Democratic presidents up is both intentional and sarcastic.
“We need people at the top of their game,” Haley said during an interview. “I’m not saying that this is a Joe Biden situation, but are we really going to go and have two eighty-year-olds running for president?”
At his rally in Manchester, Trump said that he took a cognitive test and “aced it.” “I’ll let you know when I go bad. I really think I’ll be able to tell you,” he added. “I feel my mind is stronger than it was 25 years ago. Is that possible?”
Since entering the GOP race, Haley has called for federal officeholders over 75 to take a mental competency test. Also, Haley argues the presidential contest should not be a showdown between men near or above 80, taking a shot at both Trump and Biden.
