National Weather Service Warns First Heat Wave of the Year Could Hit over 100 Degrees in the West

The first heat wave of 2024 is just one week away. According to the National Weather Service, many states in the West need to brace up for its accompanying “life-threatening” effects.

These regions should prepare for high temperatures this June that could surpass anything that has ever been recorded. Here’s what we should expect.

2024 Welcomes Its First Heat Wave

Experts are certain that the year’s first heat wave will occur around the second week of June 2024. They predicted it would first spread across the West in a few days.

Consequently, our houses are about to get way hotter—and if meteorologists are right, hotter than ever before. Therefore, they’ve warned residents of dangerous temperature levels in Western states such as Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Temperatures Could Rise Above 100 Degrees

If you’re wondering just how hot the heat wave could be, scientists have a good idea. The National Weather Service is foreseeing temperature levels as high as 100 degrees and even more.

Several cities in the West have particularly caught the attention of the weathermen. These experts are especially warning Phoenix and Las Vegas residents of temperatures as high as 111 degrees from Wednesday, June 12.

Death Valley Is in a Class of Its Own

If the projected temperatures in Phoenix and Las Vegas are bad, then Death Valley is even worse. This area, which has been historically and notoriously hot, could suffer heat from temperatures of 124 degrees just at the end of the heat wave week.

If their prediction comes true, Death Valley will break its temperature record for a time of the year as early as this.

    High Temperatures and High Humidity

According to the National Weather Service, regions that will be affected by the coming heat wave will experience high temperatures and high humidity. High humidity means the air will contain lots of moisture, causing residents to experience excessive and prolonged sweating.

The service also warns Phoenix residents of the possibility of heat-related illnesses, especially for those who will stay outdoors for long hours.

    What Should Affected Residents Do?

Thankfully, the agency has prescribed several actions that will minimize the effect of the heat wave. According to the weather service’s website, “The best advice is to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and in an air-conditioned place.”

The service also has solutions for those who can’t help staying outdoors for long. “If you work or spend time outside, take extra precautions, such as frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.”

    Wear Light Clothing

In addition, the weather service encourages every resident in affected states to wear light, loose-fitting clothes. Those who have an option can consider rescheduling high-energy activities for mornings and evenings, which are the colder parts of the day.

Interestingly, residents of affected regions can shield themselves from the effects of the heat wave by making small adjustments.

    Watch Out for Car Heat

One place people are likely to suffer heat is in their cars. The National Weather Service has previously warned that “Car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes during hot or warm weather.”

The service’s website advises against leaving children and pets in the car and suggests that “Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.”

The Heat Wave is Likely to Break Multiple Records

Death Valley won’t be the only place with a record-breaking possibility. In addition to this heat wave surpassing temperature numbers we’ve ever seen at this early stage of the year, there will be other possible record-breakers in Las Vegas, for instance.

Sin City could hit 111 degrees any time next week. If it happens, this will be the first time.

    Hard Time in California

Weather watchers are also keeping an eye on California. For some interesting reasons, the state will also have a uniquely harsh experience during the heat wave.

The state is already experiencing a 14,000-acre wildfire ravaging Eastern San Francisco. Emergency responders are frantically working around the clock to save the region.

A California Heat Wave Would Worsen Matters

For California residents already overwhelmed by a brutal and massive wildfire, dealing with a heat wave could be unbearable.

Already, many families have relocated from their dwellings because of the fires. Having to face a destructive heat wave soon afterward could make 2024 the worst year ever for a lot of people.

What’s the Cause of the Heat Wave?

Experts are pointing fingers at a heat dome as the cause of the imminent heat wave. Meteorologists have described a heat dome as “hot ocean air [that] gets trapped over a certain area due to high atmospheric pressure.”

When this occurs during summer, heat waves will result. Currently, an advancing heat dome from Mexico has received the blame for the coming heat wave.

2024 Could Be the Hottest Year Yet

2024 could rise above the hottest years we have ever experienced. The heat wave in the coming days is emerging just before summer. One could wonder what summer has in store.

But weather scientists won’t be too surprised by any of these. For several months in the past, weather reports have warned about 2024’s heat package even as climate change takes a toll on the earth.
