A Nevada grand jury indicted a man who leaped over a judicial bench and attacked a judge during a sentencing. According to the viral courtroom videos, the man jumped over the bench during a hearing in Las Vegas in January 2024. Consequently, the jury has indicted him for attempted murder.

The grand jury returned a nine-count indictment, including attempted murder, against 30-year-old Debra Redden on Thursday, February 8, 2024. On January 3, 2024, Redden hurled himself over Judge Mary Kay Holthus’ bench with his arms outstretched.

According to reports, the Clark County District Court Judge was about to deliver Redden’s sentence in an attempted battery case. However, before she could deliver the sentence, the defendant hurled himself at her and attacked her.

Consequently, the new indictment accuses Redden of placing his hands around Holthus’s throat and hitting her head. Video of the scene spread across social media, garnering millions of views within hours of the hearing.

Courtroom cameras recorded Holthus’ clerk and a court marshal fighting with Redden to restrain him in the wild video. A week later, Judge Holthus sentenced him to up to four years in prison for the battery charge he had pleaded guilty to in November 2023.

Before the attack, courtroom videos show that Redden’s attorney requested a probation sentence. However, Holthus denied the request. “I appreciate that,” she said in the video. “But I think it’s time that he gets a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history.”

Shortly after, Redden ran toward Holthus, causing courtroom attendees to yell and Holthus to look up from her bench. Holthus tried to scramble out of her chair as Redden lunged at her, but he grabbed her before she could.

Due to the attack, the Las Vegas judge and a courtroom marshal suffered injuries. According to a spokeswoman for the Eighth Judicial District Court, authorities rushed them to a hospital. Five days later, Holthus resumed Redden’s sentencing.

The attack, she said during a new sentencing on January 8, did not impact her decision. She sentenced Redden to 19 to 48 months in prison for the charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm. Afterward, a grand jury indicted him on a nine-count charge.

The new indictment for attempted murder alleges that Redden attacked Holthus “by grabbing her, pulling her hair, placing his hands around her throat and or hitting her on the head by manner and means unknown.” In addition, it accuses him of “punching and/or kicking and/or pushing” a Las Vegas police officer.

Although the lawyer who represented Redden at the initial hearing has not commented on the indictment, Redden’s family has. The defendant’s foster mother, Karen Springer, and older sister, LaDonna Daniels, contended the indictment.

They told reporters outside court during the initial hearing that doctors diagnosed Redden with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, court records show he was competent to stand trial. According to Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson, Redden’s adult criminal history consists of several convictions.

These include convictions for three felonies and nine misdemeanors, mostly involving violent acts. Following the new nine-count charge indictment, the court has scheduled Redden’s arraignment for February 29, 2024.
