It’s been two months now, and Jessica Barnes is still missing. The South Carolina woman’s whereabouts have continued to pose a riddle to her parents and law enforcement. The only sign of hope for her parents is text messages from her phone. However, her mom believes they are not from her daughter.
20-year-old Jessica Barnes was last seen on August 1, 2024, the day she walked out of her Pendleton home and never returned. Reports say that she had a misunderstanding with her husband before she left home.
The couple have been living in peace as authorities haven’t found any record of previous calls of disturbance from the residence. Also, Pendleton Police have said that her husband isn’t a suspect.
Although she was only reported missing on September 10, the cops have invested a lot of effort in locating her. At this point, there are more questions than answers in this increasingly worrisome case. If the text messages aren’t from Barnes, then who are they from? Also, what do the text messages say? The Text Jessica Barnes’ Mother, Cecilia Varvara, Received
On September 10, Barnes’ mother, Cecilia Varvara, disclosed that a text message came from her daughter’s phone. However, journalists have yet to find out what the text messages said. Most of what the police know is that Barnes had a disagreement with her husband that likely made her leave the house.

“There was some issues with her and her husband,” said Pendleton Police Chief Roberts Crosby. “They were having the typical marital disputes, argumentative, and then, she just left.” Apart from her husband, Jessica Barnes shared the apartment with two roommates. The roommates have said Barnes never disclosed to them where she was headed.
Reports say Barnes was last seen in an orange T-shirt, jean shorts, a black backpack, and flip-flops. Her disappearance is a source of pain not just to her immediate family but also to her neighbors. In response, the community has organized a prayer vigil for her.
What the Authorities Have Been Doing To Locate Jessica Barnes
For their part, Pendleton Police used every resource and skill at their disposal to locate Barnes. According to the police chief, they conducted a thorough search of her house for clues on her whereabouts and looked for articles of clothing and electronics that could point to her possible location.
They discovered several items that they believed could be useful for the search. One of these was a phone, which they sent to a lab for analysis. According to Crosby, Jessica Barnes’ mother has revealed that she has received several text messages from an account that bore her daughter’s name.
However, she stated that the messages, especially the last one, didn’t sound like her daughter.
During their investigation, the police also disclosed that they tracked a car owned by the couple’s roommate to a spot where the couple visited frequently. However, phone records showed that it was Barnes’ husband who drove the car to the place. Crosby didn’t give any further information on this finding.
No Foul Play Suspected Yet
Police are still treating the case as a missing person’s case. They haven’t pinpointed a suspect just yet, and it seems no foul play is suspected yet. However, Barnes’ mother fears that the worst could have happened to her daughter.
The police are also considering and haven’t ruled out Varvara’s suspicions. Meanwhile, fingers are crossed as parties await the results of ongoing investigations. However, at the moment, police have made some progress having discovered the location where Barnes’ phone last pinged.
However, they have declined to reveal the location to the public. Also, police have asked anyone with useful information to contact the Pendleton Police. Such persons could reach them either by calling 864-646-9409 to reach Crosby or by sending a mail to [email protected].
Barnes’ family has released a statement saying, “While we cannot comment on the progress of the investigation into her disappearance, we can confirm that no suspect or persons of interest have been named by law enforcement at this time.”

Barnes’ mother, Cecilia Varvara, is also pretty optimistic that they will locate Jessica Barnes in one piece. Speaking about her daughter, she described her as an intelligent and creative individual. “She loved God, first of all, and she is an artist,” the mom also revealed. “She likes to write songs and everything. She’s very bubbly and smart.”
Similar Cases of Disappearance
In February 2024, a little girl was declared missing in a slightly similar case. 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham was declared missing after she wasn’t found on the school bus in Livingston, Texas. After 5 days of a fruitless search authorities found her body in the Trinity River along U.S. 59.
However, local police have arrested a man, Don Steven McDougal, 42 who lives close to Cunnignham’s home. Police arrested him after video evidence and cell phone information revealed that he was at the Trinity Rivers as well as two other suspicious locations.
There is also the case of Stanley Kotowski who was declared missing in South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island. Unfortunately, authorities found him dead underneath a nearby home after ten days of frantic search. Hopefully, authorities will not find Jessica Barnes in the same way.
