An Illinois suburb has decided against moving forward with a plan to have residents house migrants in their homes following a councilman’s viral proposal to put together a “sign-up” sheet. Naperville, an affluent suburb about 30 miles outside Chicago, has considered having residents volunteer to bring migrants into their homes.
Due to concerns that Chicago’s struggles to house migrants may spill over to the Illinois suburb, city staff considered the idea at the suggestion of Councilman Josh McBroom at a council meeting last week. The staff, however, found other agencies pursuing similar work. Therefore, city staff decided it was not necessary for further consideration.
McBroom, a city council member, made headlines during a council meeting discussion. During the meeting, he spoke about what his city should do if a wave of illegal immigrants arrives in the Illinois suburb as they have in other neighborhoods.
Since August 2022, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent more than 34,900 migrants to Chicago. The Texan governor argues that his state cannot handle the influx of people from the south alone. Hence, buses bring migrants to Illinois, dropping them at designated bus stops or delivering them to suburbs, where Metra trains take them to the city.

To date, six buses carrying migrants have left passengers at Naperville’s downtown Metra station since December 21, 2023, according to city spokeswoman Linda LaCloche. Due to this, McBroom suggested a sign-up sheet for those willing to open their homes to migrants.
“In light of the fact that I’m not going to support using other people’s money to house or aid,” McBroom started. “I do know that there are many people that do care.” “I think we live in a compassionate community,” he continued. “So, before we go down the road of following other cities’ actions, let’s find out who is willing to help.”
Furthermore, McBroom said, “You know, we do hear from constituents on both sides of this.” “What are we going to do to pre-emptively stop this?” he asked. “And then we hear from people that tell us to do more. We have a very affluent community, a lot of big homes.”
The councilman added, “I’d like to direct staff to create a sign-up sheet for individuals willing to house migrants.” In addition, McBroom said, “And if there’s people that would do that, God bless them.” He also noted that the town needs to look for volunteers and not impose. “That would be my new business. I would be looking for support from the diocese,” McBroom concluded.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, McBroom said he felt compelled to bring up the subject. He noted that he thought his council colleagues were avoiding it. “I took it upon myself to address this problem right here, and this is a potential solution,” McBroom said.
“I mean, we’ve got a major crisis, and we’re begging the suburbs to help put. We’re not going to expend any taxpayer dollars for this issue.” As he explained, the solution targeted residents whose votes had supported the “open border policy” during the Biden administration.
“Am I being provocative with my proposal? A little bit, but I’m being genuine, too,” McBroom argued. Furthermore, McBroom stated, “If you want to live with your virtues, and you support this policy and you live in a nice comfortable home in this town, then maybe open your houses. And I say that sincerely. It sounds like we don’t have anyone that wants to.”
