Former Trump Lawyer and former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, raised less than $1 million for his legal defense fund. He raised the money from just 13 donors, most of whom are his friends and a group of Donald Trump’s allies.
Giuliani faces a $146 million defamation judgment and a criminal prosecution, among other legal problems. His Political Action Committee (PAC), dedicated to helping him pay his legal bills, raised over $740,000 in six months.
The largest donation to Giuliani’s legal defense fund came mostly from Caryn Borland. Borland gave $300,000, accounting for over 40% of the total contributions. Borland, also known as Caryn Hildenbrand, gave the donations under her name.
Records show that Hildenbrand’s Living Trust previously donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s legal fund. The donation was the single largest donation to that fund, which had raised $1.6 million, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Furthermore, Hildenbrand and her husband also significantly supported Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign.

Elizabeth Ailes confirmed her $100,000 contribution, expressing support for Giuliani against what she perceives as political persecution. Also, Ailes emphasized her long-standing friendship with Giuliani, who officiated her wedding to Roger Ailes, and her connection to Donald Trump.
Other notable donations include $25,000 from businessman Lewis Topper and $35,000 from Probity International, led by Trump donor Robert Zarnegin. Also, real estate executive Arnold Gumowitz contributed $50,000. In addition, Matthew Martorano, a previous donor to the Trump Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, donated $100,000 to Giuliani’s committee.
His PAC has spent over $500,000 on his legal fees so far and had $180,000 on hand entering 2024. The former Trump lawyer is facing a litany of legal and financial struggles from trying to help Trump reverse his presidential loss in 2020.
In August 2023, Giuliani and 17 others were criminally charged in Georgia. They are accused of racketeering linked with efforts to reverse Trump’s 2020 election loss in that state. He is also being sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic voting machine manufacturers.
Furthermore, in December 2023, a federal court jury in Washington D.C. found the former Trump lawyer liable for $146 million in damages. The charges were due to him defaming two Georgia election workers he falsely accused of ballot fraud in 2020.

Following this, Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The filing submitted outlines Giuliani’s financial situation and claims his monthly net income is just $2,308. He cited the defamation judgment and money he owes various law firms and attorneys. Records show he owes over $1.3 million to Davidoff Hutcher & Citron.
Attorney Robert Costello also sued him for unpaid legal fees in 2019. Costello alleged that Giuliani has only paid $214,000 and still has a $1.36 million tab. “I can’t express how hurt I am by what Costello has done,” Giuliani said. “It’s a real shame when lawyers do things like this; their bill is way more than anything approaching legitimate fees.”
However, Giuliani has claimed that Trump might owe him some unpaid legal fees that can help. The former Trump lawyer stated that he had repeatedly appealed to Trump to pay his overdue legal fees. Giuliani believes his efforts to keep Trump in power entitle him to “millions of dollars.”
