Florida officials have arrested an 11-year-old for allegedly bringing a gun to a Jacksonville, Florida, school on February 5, 2924. According to reports, three unidentified students called a teacher at Beauclerc Elementary School’s attention to the impending danger.

The students reportedly told the teacher that the 11-year-old possessed a 9mm handgun. According to the Jacksonville County Sheriff’s Office, the student wanted to kill another student. Consequently, officials arrested and charged the unnamed 11-year-old with possession and concealing a firearm on school property.

According to the arrest and booking report, the sheriff’s office also charged him with sending a written threat to kill. The witnesses reportedly saw the 11-year-old in the bathroom, racking the slide of the handgun and waving it around. Hence, they reported to the teacher.

Afterward, the school staff searched the child’s belongings, found the weapon, and contacted the police. Duval School Board Police responded to the reports and searched the school. Then, an officer found a text on the child’s phone threatening to kill someone sent the day before.

Officers arrested the 11-year-old child and are holding him at the Duval Regional Juvenile Detention Center. According to the arrest report, the 11-year-old  allegedly admitted to wanting to kill another student. However, he “showed no remorse or emotion for his actions or wanting to kill [another student].”

Before this incident, students claimed the 11-year-old also showed the gun on a school bus. However, authorities are yet to confirm the allegations. Also, it’s not clear whether the child has an attorney yet. The Jacksonville County Sheriff’s office is also yet to release a statement regarding the child’s parents.

This incident comes a year after authorities arrested a 6-year-old student in Newport News, Virginia. The student reportedly shot their teacher during class after bringing a gun to school. Consequently, the teacher sustained a gunshot wound through her hand and into her chest.

Following an investigation into the incident, a judge sentenced the child’s mother, Deja Taylor, to 21 months in jail. The mother reportedly pleaded guilty to using marijuana while in possession of a firearm. Also, she admitted to making a false statement about her drug use during the purchase of the gun, both felonies.

Earlier this month, a jury found Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of a Michigan school shooter, guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter. Crumbley’s son reportedly killed four of his classmates and injured seven others. A judge sentenced her for her role in the shooting and negligence of her son.

According to court documents, Crumbley and her husband, James Crumbley, purchased their son the gun used in the shooting. Also, prosecutors argued that the gun was accessible to the shooter. Consequently, the parents stood trial for their roles.

Authorities say the shooter’s father, James Crumbley, will have a separate trial in March 2024. America has seen a rise in massive shootings over the years, and as a result, several groups are calling for stricter gun laws. Some groups vehemently kick against it, citing the First Amendment.

However, others argue stricter gun laws will curb gun violence across the nation. While investigations are still ongoing into the Jacksonville student, authorities are holding him at a Juvenile Detention Center.
