Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) is lobbying to secure the U.S. southern border. During an interview with CNN, Fetterman said 300,000 illegal immigrants attempting to enter the country are hindering legal migrants from achieving their “American dream.”
While speaking to CNN’s “The Lead” anchor Jake Tapper, Fetterman discussed the current migrant crisis. He claims the migrant wave is making the American immigration system “difficult.” While he noted he’s a massive proponent of legal migration, he called for a “secure border.”
Also, the Senator questioned why his progressive critics have a problem with demanding a secure border. During the lengthy interview, Tapper asked about the recent criticism from the left over his pro-Israel and pro-border security stances. “Why do you think so many progressives have criticized you?” Tapper asked.
“I honestly don’t understand,” the lawmaker replied. “I don’t understand why it’s controversial to anybody to decide that you’re going to stand with Israel in this situation.” Fetterman continued, “I honestly don’t understand why it’s controversial to say we need a secure border.”

“I’ve been very clear, in fact,” Fetterman added. Furthermore, he noted that Republicans weaponized his stance against him in his race. “I’m very much a strong supporter of immigration,” he added. “And you know, my wife’s family, that’s the origin story about that.”
Although Fetterman disclosed he supports legal immigration, the lawman clarified his stance. He emphasized that he is a proponent of securing the southern border against illegal immigration. “And I think two things can be true at the same time,” he declared.
“You can be very supportive of immigration, but we also need to have a secure border.” Afterward, Fetterman noted how the migrant surge has impacted the economy. Also, he explained how the influx of illegal border crossings makes it harder for legal immigrants to achieve their move to America.
“And I really, [what] I think about immigration is, we want to provide the American Dream for any migrant,” Fetterman said. “But it seems very difficult when you have 300,000 people showing up at our border to do that.” Consequently, the lawmaker proposed a “reset” of the U.S.’s open border policies.

He claimed that lawmakers across the board, Republican and Democratic lawmakers, must come together. Fetterman added that lawmakers “have to work together and develop a new comprehensive solution” to solve the crisis. Like other lawmakers, Fetterman has pointed out the problems at the U.S. southern border for the past few months.
Moreover, he has urged lawmakers to find solutions to fix them. During a December interview with Politico, Fetterman said, “It’s a reasonable conversation, and Democrats should engage.” However, Fetterman’s stance on the border crisis reflects what his critics call an unlikely transformation.
Many criticized the lawmaker for transforming from a run-of-the-mill progressive to having conservative views on national issues since he took office. However, his unwavering support for Israel since the Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack has earned him conservative followers.
Furthermore, his support for a secure border and boldness in calling out corruption in his party have made him famous among conservatives.
