Elon Musk, owner of popular social media company X (formerly Twitter), has recently caused quite a stir on the platform. The billionaire tech investor began to trend after a post he made accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of lying.
The controversy originated from an X post where the Vice President accused Donald Trump of planning to ban abortion nationwide.
What Did Kamala Harris Post?
Following the first presidential debate, which was held on June 27, 2024, Kamala Harris posted on her X account on June 30, telling voters not to vote for former president Trump. In her tweet, she cited Trump’s plan to ban abortion nationwide as her reason why he shouldn’t get their votes.
“Donald Trump would ban abortion nationwide,” she declared. Apparently, the post drew more scrutiny than she had foreseen.
Community Notes Flagged the Post
Scrutiny of the post came from X’s local content moderation program, Community Notes. Community Notes is a community-driven feature on the X platform that debunks false stories and accounts.
The program also provides relevant context on posts based on information from a crowd-sourced system. In this case, Community Notes flagged down Harris’s post as untrue.
What Did Community Notes Say?
While flagging down the Vice President’s post, the community notes program added some clarification. “President Trump has repeatedly said he will not sign a national abortion ban,” it stated.
The Community Notes scrutiny was music to the ears of many opponents of the Biden administration. Many of them mocked the Vice President in the comments, and Musk was one of them.
Elon Musk Slams Harris
In a post that included a screenshot of the Vice President’s flagged post, Elon Musk drew attention to the relevance of the Community Notes program. Simultaneously, he criticized Harris for trying to misinform the American voters.
“When will politicians, or at least the intern who runs their account, learn that lying on this platform doesn’t work anymore?” he quizzed.

He Reproved Other Politicians
As was evident in his post, Musk didn’t spare the entire political class, many of whom have previously spread misinformation on the platform.
Before Elon Musk bought the platform, X had a censorship system for debunking misinformation, especially from political figures. However, many Republicans accused the system of unfairly targeting conservative figures. Musk cited this unjust system as a reason for his takeover of the app.
Harris’s Appeal to Voters
The post was Vice President Harris’ contribution to the Biden administration’s appeal to female voters. Women’s reproductive rights have undoubtedly become a front-burner issue in the forthcoming elections.
Many women are expected to vote for the candidate who will guarantee abortion rights. The Biden administration is hoping to capitalize on women’s anger over the overturned Roe v. Wade to muster more votes for November.
We Will “Stop Him”
In her post, Harris assured American women that the Biden administration had their backs. She promised that she and the president would contend against Donald Trump and revive abortion rights in the country.
“President @JoeBiden and I will do everything in our power to stop him and restore women’s reproductive freedom,” she declared. Besides women, the post is likely to sway men sympathetic to women’s reproductive rights.
What is Donald Trump’s Position on a Nationwide Abortion Ban?
Contrary to what many people believe, President Donald Trump doesn’t support a nationwide abortion ban. The former president had emphatically declared that a nationwide ban wasn’t necessary.
He made this statement in light of the monumental overturn of Roe v. Wade, which had transferred abortion decisions to individual states. According to Trump, each state should make its own rules.

Is Trump Pro-Choice or Pro-Life?
Journalists posed this question to the former president at his Florida residence in 2022. They asked this question in view of his then-recently announced decision not to support a national abortion ban. This position, which is a break from his previous stiff opposition to abortion, threw Democrats off balance.
He answered, “You know exactly which one it is.” Trump decided not to give a definite answer to this question to avoid annoying voters.
Trump Has Slammed Democratic Abortion Policies
Donald Trump, who ran for president in 2020 as a staunch pro-life advocate, has, on many occasions, blasted Democrats for their pro-choice policies. He has particularly taken a swipe at their move to enforce late-term abortions.
He called the policy “extreme” and “radical” while deriding them for their lack of empathy for unborn babies. During his presidency, Trump had multiple face-offs with Democrats over the issue.
Trump Praised the Supreme Court Justices
The former president has also lauded the bravery of the Supreme Court justices who made it possible to overturn Roe v. Wade. He had praise, especially for those he had appointed to the apex court during his administration’s four-year tenure.
He described their decision as a landmark judgment that will shape the history of abortion rights in the country for a long time to come.
