Great Danes were responsible for the death of a California mom on Thursday, August 8, 2024, according to local police. On the sad Thursday, Davina Corbin, 56, was found dead on the streets. Police have placed the time of her death at around 1:58 a.m., which was when her body was found.
Reports say she was walking in the Blackhawk Trail neighborhood of Feather Falls, California, when she met her shocking demise. Interestingly, 25 Great Danes were found running loose a little distance from where the attack took place.
A neighbor found Corbin’s “badly beaten” body in front of her home and immediately called the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. On arrival, police found Corbin’s body with numerous dog bite injuries. The neighborhood was thrown into shock at the sight of the fatal incident. Angry neighbors have stated that Corbin’s untimely death was very much preventable.
One resident told journalists that the negligence of local authorities contributed to Corbin’s death. He narrated that he and other residents have called the attention of Butte County Animal Control to the unrestrained dogs a number of times.
He also stated that the unruly dogs have almost attacked him once in the past. “The Great Danes, they come across the road here at me. I jumped in the car and left,” he said, describing his encounter.
“Nothing’s been done about it until now,” he lamented. “Wait until somebody gets killed by those dogs. That’s a tragedy that should have never, ever have happened, ever,” he added. He believed that the Animal Control Department should have acted immediately on the information he gave to them.

The Woman Was Mauled to Death by Great Danes
Autopsy findings have now backed initial reports which fingered the Great Danes in Corbin’s death. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) took possession of the clothing Corbin wore on the night of her attack. They then sent it to a forensic pathologist to analyze.
The pathologist tested the clothing for DNA traces, which they confirmed belonged to the dogs. The police then went in search of the massive dogs.
A Search Warrant Led Cops to the Culprits
During the course of investigations, neighbors informed the police that Corbin didn’t have a car and usually walked the popular hiking trail on which she died. Acting on this information, the police were able to trace the likely source of the attack. They suspected a home that was close to where they found Corbin’s body.
Afterward, police deputies and detectives obtained a search warrant for the house. While they served the search warrant, they discovered 25 Great Danes running around unrestrained.
What Happened to the Great Danes?
Immediately, the Police swung into action and began capturing the dogs. It wasn’t an easy task. The sheriff’s office reported that they spent almost the whole day rounding up the dogs. However, they were only able to capture 23 of the 25 dogs. As of August 10, the remaining two were still at large.
Butte County authorities appealed to the community, urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the dogs to contact the Butte County Animal Control office. Also, they urged anyone with information about the case to reach out to the police.
The police have handed over the 23 captured dogs to animal control. On August 15, local media reported that they had euthanized seven of the dogs, which they believed carried out the attack. All seven were adult Great Danes. The Butte County Public Health office has disclosed their plans to put the other 18 Great Dane puppies up for adoption.
Corbin’s Family Has Set Up a GoFundMe
The family of the slain woman, led by her son, has launched a fundraising appeal for her. The son, Justin Corbin said the family needed help in giving Davina Corbin a proper celebration of life. “Help Davina Corbin’s Family Lay Her to Rest,” read the title of the fundraising appeal.
“Our mother, Davina Corbin, 56, was tragically taken from us after being attacked by dogs on August 8, 2024,” Justin Corbin wrote. “We are struggling to come to terms with this loss and need help saying goodbye.”
“We’re raising funds to cover the costs of her Celebration of Life ceremony and to bring her home to rest,” the note stated. At the time of writing, the family had received 146 donations and had met the $6,000 target.

What are Great Danes?
Great Danes are a breed of dog that originated in Germany about 400 years ago as hunting dogs. Their owners used them to hunt wild boars, bears, and deer. However, over the years, they have evolved into human companions.
Interestingly, Great Danes are now known for being gentle, loving, confident, and reserved. Humans have testified of their playfulness, too. The Danes are famously tall dogs. They grow to heights of up to 2 ft 9in or 84cm and are the most giant dog breeds in the world.
Can Great Danes be Aggressive?
Although they aren’t one of the naturally aggressive dog breeds, Great Danes can exhibit sudden aggressive behavior. Experts have linked this erratic conduct to their territoriality. They can get into fits of rage if they sense that their home, space, or family is under threat. Hence, there have been a good number of reports of people getting mauled down by Great Danes.
A dangerous aspect of their aggressive tendencies is that there are hardly any warning signs. They can switch from very playful to angry in a blink. Experts have also linked their aggressive tendencies to their history as hunting dogs.
